ALAMOSA, Colo. - It was a heartbreaking night for Adams State Wrestling in the team's dual opener as they fell 21-18 to Colorado School of Mines in what was a hard fought conference bout. With the loss, the Grizzlies are 0-1 in dual competition.
It was a fast start for the Grizzlies but a late rally from the Orediggers (6-0, 4-0 RMAC) led to the dual coming down to the final match at 285 pounds to determine a winner. The Grizzlies got wins in four of the first six matches, but the Orediggers won the final four bouts to seal the three-point win.
Of the four wins, Adams State won the first three match-ups to grab a 12-0 lead.
Isaiah De La Cerda got things going in the best way possible at 125 pounds. he pinned his opponent in 4:53 to give the home team a 6-0 lead. De La Cerda's pin over Matthew Lavengood help build the momentum for a fast start.
Up next at 133 pounds was a top-12 match-up between No. 5
Darek Huff and No. 12 Noah Au-Yeung. The match started off close, but that was only time it was close. Huff was dominant for the majority of the match despite Yeung having the riding time edge. Controlling the tempo, Huff held on for a 9-2 decision and pushed the Grizzlies lead to 9-0.
The 141 pound match was the opposite of the previous one as
Dylan Udero scored a hard fought 9-7 decision that came all the way down to the last second. Udero and Lukas Erickson went back-and-forth for all three periods. Udero jumped out to an early lead before Erickson fought back to make things interesting down the stretch. Despite the furious rally, Udero's speed and stamina proved to be the difference in the win.
Leading 12-0, Adams State's run was snapped at 149 pounds.
Noah Hermosillo fell 6-4 in overtime to Noah Ottum but was able to fight back from a late deficit to force sudden death. The decision gave the Orediggers their first points as they trailed 12-3.
It was at the 157-pound match where things got interesting. Skyler Lykins cut Mines' deficit to just three, 12-9, as he was able to pin
Ryan Rochford in 2:06. Adams State's final match win came in the next bout at 165 pounds.
Koery Windham scored the Grizzlies final six points of the night with a late pin against Keenan Willits. The two grapplers battled through all three periods but it was Windham who ultimately had the edge down the stretch. The pin came at the 6:21 mark as his win pushed the Grizzlies lead to 18-9.
The Orediggers next four wins to close out the night all came by way of decision. Robert Gambrell got things started with a 8-7 win over
Isaac Lopez at 174 pounds. Lopez wa sable to tie the match at 7-all late in the third but riding time help Gambrell earn the win.Â
Connor Ventura kept things in going for Mines with an 8-1 victory over
William Tyler at 184 pounds. With the two losses, Adams State lead was cut to three, 18-15. Mines tied the dual at 18-18 in the next weight class and secured the win in the final weight class.
Khalil Gipson and Jacob Feldman battled at 197 pounds in a bout that was hard fought from start to finish. Feldman held off Gipson, 7-6, to tie the dual at 18-all.
James Romero got the starting nod at 285 pounds but ultimately fell 7-3 to Weston Hunt as the Orediggers finished the comeback to win by three.
The Grizzlies will look to rebound tomorrow afternoon as they host another RMAC foe in Chadron State College. Mat action against the Eagles is slated for a 2 p.m. start inside Plachy Hall Gym.
