ALAMOSA, Colo. - Fueled by three six-point match wins and a fast start, the Adams State Wrestling team secured its first dual win of the season Saturday afternoon at home with a 18-point victory over the Chadron State Eagles. The Grizzlies 28-12 win moves their dual record to 1-1 overall with the same mark in RMAC competition.
The Grizzlies picked up six wins in 10 weight bouts, including winning the first three match-ups to down the Eagles (3-3, 2-2 RMAC). Two of the Grizzlies six-point wins came thanks in part to
Dylan Udero and
James Romero pinning their opponents at 141 and 285 pounds respectively.
The afternoon started with Adams State picking up a forfeit win at 125 pounds.
Isaiah De La Cerda stepped on the mat to secure the win as CSC was open and set up a 6-0 advantage for the home team. Like the night before the Grizzlies got out to a fast start but things were different this time around as they held on and led the entirety of the dual.
Getting the starting nod at 133 pounds was
Jonathan Andreatta who matched up a tough opponent in Brandon Kile. Andreatta held his own the whole way through as he scored an 8-5 decision to push the Grizzlies lead to 9-0.
Udero pushed the Grizzlies lead to 15-0 with their second six-point match win. Udero secured the win with a pin in the third period at 141 pounds. The pin at the 5:23 mark as a reversal gave Udero his first lead at 3-2 which ultimately helped him get into position for the fall over Joe Ritzen.
The 149-pound weight class was a spirited bot between
Noah Hermosillo and Chase Clasen. A pair of takedowns and an escape in the first period proved to be the difference maker as Clasen held off Hermosillo for a 7-6 decision victory.
Ryan Rochford then dropped an 8-3 decision at 157 pounds and the Grizzlies lead was cut to nine, 15-6.
With five matches left, Adams State secured wins in three of them to keep CSC from having chances at a comeback.
Koery Windham got things back in Adams State's favor with a low scoring decision win at 165 pounds. Windham downed Tate Allison 4-3 to pushed the team lead back to double figures, 18-6.
Mat Hebel kept the hopes alive for the Eagles with a 6-2 decision over
William Gustavson at 174 pounds. Trailing 18-9, the Eagles still had a chance to spoil things for the Grizzlies.
William Tyler kept things going for the Grizzlies with an 11-2 major decision at 184 pounds. Tyler jumped out to a 4-1 lead after on period and then scored his final seven points in the second period before his opponent Jay Westcott ever scored again.
The Eagles picked up their final win at 197 pounds with a 9-5 decision from Wade French over
Khalil Gipson. With the team score at 22-12 going into the final bout the Grizzlies got a statement win from Romero. Needing just one period, Romero pinned Rulon Taylor in 1:51 to slam the door on the dual and give Adams State the 28-12 win.
The Grizzlies will be back in action next weekend as they head to Gunnison, Colo. On Friday, Jan. 11 they will compete in the Western Colorado Open at 2 p.m. The following day on Jan. 12 the Grizzlies remain at Western Colorado for the Tracy Borah Duals.
