Grizzlies In Search of Success at Home Against Utah Foes

Alamosa, Colo. – The Adams State Men's soccer team returns home this weekend, awaiting Utah foes Dixie State and Westminster College for Friday and Sunday afternoon matches to kick off week six of conference play. After suffering two road losses last weekend, the Grizzlies head into week six in search of success at home before heading Grand Junction to finish off the season. The games will kick off Friday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. on the ASU Soccer Field.

Keeping Up With the Grizzlies

Adams State comes into Week 6 with an overall record of 1-10-1, including a 1-8-1 record within the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Although falling in a bout against UC Colorado Springs last Friday, individual team leader Dylan Udero would send an assisted goal from junior midfielder, Raul Magno into the back of the net to put the Grizzlies on the board first. It would take UCCS 22 minutes to respond and score in the 78th. The Mountain Lions would put up two more to down the Grizzlies at home 3-1.

The Grizzlies would head further north to the Mile High City for a matchup against Regis that saw a high powered Ranger offense put up two early first half goals in the fourth and 19th minute of the match. Dylan Udero would then again be the first to put the Grizzlies on the board, drawing a penalty kick which saw the back of the net to put the Grizzlies back into contention. The single point deficit wouldn't last long however, as the Rangers would go on and score two more on the Grizzlies, putting up an admirable four goals in the first half. The second half would stay quiet for both teams until Regis came in hot and got on the board for a fifth time in the 82nd minute, putting the Grizzlies away 5-1.

Scouting the Trailblazers

Dixie State comes into Week 6 of conference play at 6-7-1 overall, including a 5-5 record within the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. After an unlucky week five at home, the Trailblazers look to snap a three-game losing streak in the second-to-last week of conference play. Standing at seventh overall in the RMAC, Dixie State is led by senior forward, Moises Medina who stands at third in individual points and top five for game-winning goals within the RMAC.  Medina also holds respectable school records in goals scored, points, and assists. Behind him are freshman midfielder, Guglielmo Bianchi and freshman forward, John Joseph.

Last Meeting

October 21st of 2018 marked the first time that Dixie and Adams State clashed in a conference matchup and the first time that the teams bumped heads in nine years. In what may have been one of the only times that the Grizzlies and the Trailblazers met for a matchup, the Grizzlies would fall on their first visit to Trailblazer stadium in a 1-3 bout. Dixie State would have an explosive first half, putting up three goals and outshooting the Grizzlies 23-7. Adams State's Benji Rogers would fight back in the second, putting up his second goal of the 2018 season, but it would be too little, too late. This year marks the first time that the Blazers will meet with the Grizzlies on Adams State turf in team history, as well as the first time the two teams face off in consecutive seasons. The Grizzlies look to capitalize at home, having a record of 0-1-1 against Dixie state.

Scouting the Griffins
Westminster crosses into Colorful Colorado looking to add onto a three-game win streak after a successful week five of conference play at home. Lead by Danny Darreli, the Griffins stand at no. 25 in Division II and second in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with an overall record of 9-3-2, including an almost perfect conference record of 6-1-2. Darreli stands at third in Division II for game-winning goals and leads the RMAC in individual points, goals, and game-winning goals. Other Westminster weapons include freshman forward, Max Bingman who stands at top five in the conference for overall points.

Last Meeting
The Grizzlies and Griffins last clashed in Salt Lake City around a similar date last year. After 90 minutes, the match would result in an 0-3 road loss for the Grizzlies after being outshot 26-9. The first goal of the game would come four minutes into the game following a shot on goal before the second. The rest of the first half stayed quiet on both sides.

The Grizzlies stayed in contention into the second half with a shot on goal from Dylan Udero in the 55th which would result in a save for Westminster. It would be the only sliver of light the Grizzlies saw before another Griffin goal would come into play late in the 57th minute to put the Grizzlies down 0-2. Another score would come in the bout at the 63rd to send Adams State home with another road loss on the season.
