ALAMOSA Colo. – The Adams State Men's soccer team ended week six of conference play on another downfall at home against No. 25 Westminster College this afternoon, falling to 1-12-1 (1-10-1, RMAC) on the season. The Grizzlies have a last chance to capitalize at home next week before heading to Grand Junction for a season closer seven days from now.
With their days of the 2019 season being numbered, the Adams State Men's soccer team looked to make a statement against a nationally ranked opponent. Unfortunately for the Grizzlies, it would be the Griffins to swoop the ball in the first minute and score off an assisted goal from freshman forward Max Bingman. The Grizzlies would stay quiet on offense, unable to respond until the 23
rd where
Benji Rogers,
Juan Pablo Segura, and
Pablo Fernandez would infiltrate Griffin territory and put up five consecutive shots with one on goal. Adams State would end the first half outshooting Westminster 9-6, but stayed scoreless after 45.
After an explosive first half and a single-point deficit, the Grizzlies looked to stay in contention and shock the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in the second half. It would be Adams State to get the short end of the stick early in the second half however, as the Griffins launched an early aerial attack to put up a second goal in the 50
th. The goal would come about after a foul against the Grizzlies in their own territory. Reid Arne would find Max Bingman who sent a second heater directly to the back of ASU net, putting the Grizzlies down 0-2 early in the second half. Unable to retaliate, Adams State would only have five total shots with one on goal after halftime. A short spurt of offense came about from the Grizzlies in the 72
nd that would result in the Grizzlies staying scoreless and suffering a sixth shut-out loss in the 2019 season.
Grizzly offense opened the matchup at home about as well as any team would hope against a nationally ranked opponent, outshooting the 25
th ranked Griffins 9-6. False hope came after 90 minutes as the Griffins would catch up, outshooting the Grizzlies 14-17.
Jacob Faircloth would earn seven more saves on the day, standing at second in the RMAC for saves-per-game.
The Adams State Men's soccer team will meet with CSU-Pueblo on the ASU soccer field next Friday at 3 p.m. for a home schedule closer against the Thunderwolves to open up the final week of conference play. Grizzlies look to close their 2019 season in a Sunday afternoon clash against the Mavericks on the road.
