ALAMOSA, Colo- Ending their final set of games at home, Adams State Women's soccer faced off against Western Colorado for their senior game. Unfortunately, the Sunday morning matchup would result in the Grizzlies closing out their home schedule with a loss.
Â
The game came off to a slow start and remained that way for a majority of the first 20 minutes. Outside of fouls and a corner kick by each team, the game remained quiet. In the 18
th minute
Rachel Boyle fired a shot on goal in attempt to put the Grizzlies on the board first, but the Mountaineers goalie prevented that from happening. In the 25
th minute, Western Colorado would go on the attack and draw a foul. The foul led to the Mountaineers being able to take over Grizzlies territory and nab a goal, putting them ahead 1-0. Grizzlies were able to acquire a few more corner kicks before the half ended but were not able to capitalize on the kicks.
Â
The second half came off to a much faster start than the first. In just the first five minutes, Jayne Scheiss threw a shot at the goal that was just wide. It wouldn't be her only attempt either. Scheiss put 4 shots on, 2 of which were shots on goal that had to be stopped by the Mountaineers goalie. Grizzlies dominated possession in the second half and refused to leave Western's territory. By drawing corner kicks and effectively utilizing their defensive backbone for transitions, Grizzlies put high pressure on the Mountaineers. Western Colorado was truly tested when Grizzlies offense produced a successful combination that allowed
Maya Mau to get a rocket of a shot off. Much to the Grizzlies dismay, the shot hit the crossbar and they were not able to score off the rebound. As good of a shot it was, it wasn't able to get them on the board and they remained scoreless for the rest of the game.
Â
The Grizzlies drew 6 corner kicks in the game, drawing 3 times more than Western Colorado did and refusing to give up corner kicks to Western Colorado. Adams also outshot the Mountaineers by putting 10 shots in, 4 of which were shots on goal.
Corri Zaiger, senior goalkeeper who the team celebrated today for their senior game, stopped 4 of Westerns shots on goal.
Mollee Heeney and Brenna Oakley, the other two seniors of the team, played key roles in the Grizzlies transition game to the offensive side and filling in where necessary, serving as leaders for the team today.
Â
Despite their dominant field performance, the Grizzlies took a tough loss to the Mountaineers who managed to get a lucky goal on the board early. Today's loss puts Adams State Women's soccer team at an overall record of 3-11 with a conference record of 1-10. Next weekend the team will look to bounce back as they face off against New Mexico Highlands and CSU-Pueblo. The Grizzlies will look to end their losing streak and finish off their 2019 regular season on a high note. Â
