Grizzlies Find Glory In Land of Enchantment

Santa Fe, NM – Adams Women's Soccer team met New Mexico Highlands for their first game on the road this weekend. New Mexico Highlands was handed a tough and shutout loss by the Grizzlies in the Friday afternoon matchup.

For the first 15 minutes of the game, there wasn't much action outside of an occasional shot from either team. Shots began to pick up around the 20th minute of the game, shots fired from both ends with Adams earning a few more of them. It was just as the first half was nearing an end that a shot finally got past a goalie. Two players from the Cowgirls drew fouls, one of them getting a red card. One of the girls tripped a Grizzly in the box, leading to a penalty kick that Jayne Scheiss was given the chance to take. Using the kick, Scheiss was able to net the first goal of the game for Adams and the first goal of her season. With only a minute left to play, the Cowgirls weren't able to bounce back and the Grizzlies came out of the first half with a 1-0 lead.

The second half was where things really began to speed up. The Grizzlies began to pick up momentum, playing just as dominantly as they did against Western Colorado in the second half. Adams was able to keep most of the possession for the second half, putting shot after shot on the Cowgirls goalie. After about 20 minutes of play in the second half and plenty of shots, Grizzlies offense was finally able to net another goal fired by Payton Billingham for her first of the season. Only 15 seconds later, Gia Barone netted her first of the season to put the Grizzlies up by 3. And not even 5 minutes later (it was 2 minutes later in fact), Adams would net their final goal of the game from a shot by Zoe Moses that put them up 4-0. The Grizzlies held on to the ball for the rest of the game which allowed them to successfully shut out New Mexico Highlands for a 4-0 win.

Overall, the Grizzlies came out and played a strong and dominant game. Tripling New Mexico's shots, Adams was able to put 22 shots in with 14 of those shots being on goal. The girls were also able to draw 6 corner kicks compared to the Cowgirls one corner kick. With how much possession they were able to withhold, the Grizzlies keeper didn't have to make too many saves and when she did, her defense helped her out. In fact, two of the goals scored by Adams today were scored by defenders Scheiss and Billingham. The strong defensive unit of the Grizzlies truly shined today and helped the Grizzlies pull out a win.

With today's win, the Grizzlies put an end to their 7-game losing streak with a statement of a game. The Adams State Women's soccer team now stands at 4-11 with a conference record of 2-10. Carrying momentum from todays win, the team will head to CSU-Pueblo in search for another win and to end their season on a high note.
