ALAMOSA, Colo – The Adams State women's soccer team saw their first conference win this season Friday, shutting out Colorado Christian 1-0 for their first win against the Cougars in four years. The Grizzlies sit at 3-4 overall, and 1-3 in conference play.
The game stayed slow and steady throughout, but it was the Grizzlies who came out on top after 90 minutes.
Chloe Marston and
Carena Harrison led the way to an early aggressive presence in the matchup, attempting to capitalize off various corner kicks from senior midfielder
Brenna Oakey but came up short. It wouldn't be until the 25
th minute that
Sydney Wiedeman fired a shot that saw the back of the net, putting the Grizzlies on top for the rest of the Friday afternoon matchup.
The second half of the matchup saw early action from the Cougars firing wide shots in the 53
rd and 56
th minute but the game ultimately stayed quiet with tough defense played on both ends of the field. The Grizzlies came out on top with nine shots with two on goal and six total corner kicks. CCU had a total of five shots with none on goal. Cougars mauled the Grizzlies in fouls, totaling six in the matchup compared to Adams' two.
Coach
Colin Baker was pleased with his team's performance Friday, but acknowledged that there was still work to be done. "The team picked it up today and worked for one another. We've preached two things all season long, that everybody has a job and they need to do it well. The other is to be the teammate you want fighting next to you. We did that today and it showed. We will enjoy these three points for a little bit. But we've got a huge opportunity and test to get ready for on Sunday. With the same mentality and attention to detail we're going to go in and do what we can to get to 2-0 this weekend."
Sunday morning saw another RMAC rival roll in to town in the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers. The Orediggers boasted a record of 8-1-1 coming into the match, and looked as advertised for the majority of the game. Perhaps the most glaring statistic of the afternoon was the shot ratio, as Colorado School of Mines had 21 shots compared to zero shots for the Grizzlies. The Grizzly defense was able to hold their own and keep the game tight, but it was too little too late and the Orediggers headed back to Golden with a 2-0 victory.
The first goal for the Orediggers came on an unassisted laser beam from Giselle Sawaged that was a no doubter just past the 14-minute mark in the game. The score was Sawaged's third of the season, and put the Orediggers up early, 1-0.
After the rest of the first half went scoreless, the Grizzlies were still unable to generate any offense despite a valiant defensive performance. Early in the second half, Lindsey Tornabene cashed in an assist from teammate Emma Peterson just past the 48-minute mark. The goal was Tornabene's first of her 2019 campaign, and cemented a 2-0 lead for the Orediggers, that would be all they needed as they took for the victory.
After a 1-1 weekend home split, there is plenty to love about where the 2019 Adams State Women's Soccer team is headed, and what they can end up accomplishing. They will regroup this week as they prepare to go on the road to Metro State on Friday and UCCS on Saturday.
