Grizzlies Fall to West Texas A&M

Box Score CANYON, Texas – The Adams State Women's Basketball team falls to the West Texas A&M Lady Buffs Friday afternoon. The Grizzlies battled it out with freshmen Laura Gutierrez leading Adams State with 11 points.
 
West Texas A&M came out quick in the first quarter, scoring their first 12 of their quick 17 points on either the fast break or in the paint. Gutierrez put the Grizzlies on the board hitting a three pointer. Maddie Dorris added to the Grizzlies' total from the free throw line. Makaela Ewing added a jumper in the paint to close the first quarter, trailing the Buffs by 15.
 
After the second quarter opened with the Buffs adding on a layup and a free throw, Ally McKenzie made a lay up in the paint to cut the Lady Buff lead down to 16. In the remainder of the quarter, Gutierrez drained two more three's for Adams State. West Texas A&M added 14 more points in the paint to their second quarter total. The Grizzlies finished the half trailing 14-40.
 
The second half started with Zakiya Beckles hitting a three for the Grizzlies. The Lady Buffs quickly responded with a jumper in the paint. West Texas A&M continued their run in the paint, scoring 14 more points from down low. The Grizzlies added four more points on the board from two jumpers from Ewing and Marshell Hollins.
 
The fourth quarter began with Gutierrez hitting a jumper in the paint concluding her 11 points on the night. From there the Grizzlies had a dry spell, not scoring again until the last 30 seconds of the game from Kassie Schell going up, getting the and-one layup and making her free throw. Adams State forced the outside shot in the quarter, only allowing 4 points in the paint. West Texas A&M closed the game defeating the Grizzlies 74-26.
 
Crashing the boards for the Grizzlies were Carissa Schaffer, Ewing and Hollins. Schaffer finished the day with 4 rebounds, followed by Ewing and Hollins each with three. Ewing also added one block to her stats on the day.
 
The Grizzlies will be back out on the court tomorrow in Canyon, Texas to take on Eastern New Mexico at 11 a.m. MT.
