Grand Junction, Colo. – The Adams State Men's soccer team made landing on Walker Field in Grand Junction this afternoon to face Colorado Mesa for their 2019 season closer. The Grizzlies would be held to a single-point deficit to conclude the Fall season on a tough loss to the No. 3 within the RMAC, Mavericks. Adams State's 2019 season ends with a 1-14-1 overall record including a 1-12-1 record within the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
It would be a bright and sunny day in Grand Junction as two RMAC foes looked to battle it out to close the 2019 regular season. After the pitch, it would be senior
Dylan Udero to weave his way into Maverick territory to put up the first shot 35 seconds into the game. Coming out top, the Mavericks would respond with three unanswered shots between the second and sixth minute of the matchup. The first half would quickly turn into a shoot-out won by CMU, outshooting Adams State 6-13 after 45. Tension was high in the matchup as both teams would earn at least one yellow card and over ten fouls per team.
After a scoreless first half, both teams stayed on their toes looking to put the match away on a high note. Both teams would open the second half with missed opportunities to get on the board.
Pablo Fernandez would stray away from Maverick defenders in the 50
th to fire a laser to the bottom left that would see the arms of goalkeeper, Brenden Brown, rather than the back of the net. Shortly after, Colo. Mesa's Ramses Atahualpa would draw a penalty kick and boot a predictable shot that would be saved by
Jacob Faircloth. Afterwards, it would be the Mavericks to dominate the field and restrain the ball to Grizzly territory, drawing a corner kick early in the 56
th and putting up the first goal of the game.
Dylan Udero would be the first to the other end of the field, firing a shot toward the bottom-left of Maverick net but coming up short-handed as the shot would be saved to keep the Grizzlies scoreless. A slowed ASU offense would lead to a 0-1 downfall after 90.
Grizzlies walk away from the season closer with eight shots and four on goal, including two corner kicks. On the defensive end,
Jacob Faircloth would add six last saves to his career, holding a high-powered Maverick offense to a single point. Faircloth has led the Grizzlies to stand at the top of the RMAC for saves and individually leads the conference in saves per game. Tension was high as Adams State would earn 23 fouls and four yellow cards to Colorado Mesa's 17 fouls and two yellow cards.
