Adams State Takes On South Dakota

ALAMOSA, Colo. -- The Adams State Women's Basketball team travels to South Dakota to take on Black Hills State and South Dakota School of Mines. The Grizzlies are moving in to the weekend off of a big win against New Mexico Highlands. 

 

Now 1-1 in conference play, the Grizzlies are heading in to a new weekend with momentum. Adams State's top scorer is freshmen, Laura Gutierrez with 75 points on the season, averaging 9.4 per game. Following Gutierrez as points leaders are Zakiya Beckles and Marshell Hollins. Beckles has 67 points so far on the season, and is averaging 8.4 points. Beckles is also leading the Grizzlies with 14 steals and second on the team with 14 assists. Hollins, with 47 points on the season is leading the team in assists, tallying 19 and recording 10 steals. 

 

On the boards, Makaela Ewing is leading Adams State averaging 4.8 rebounds a games, while recording 38 boards on the season, 12 offensive and 26 defensive. Following Ewing is Paiton Demps, averaging 4.4 rebounds while recording 35 on the season, 12 offensive and 23 defensive. Demps is also leading the Grizzlies from the line, going a perfect 11-11. 

 

Scouting the Yellowjackets

After the first weekend into conference play, Black Hills State is 1-2 in RMAC and 4-4 overall. The Yellowjackets took the 55-47 win over South Dakota School of Mines in late November. This past weekend the Yellowjackets fell to Westminster College 53-69, and Dixie State 65-71. Last year Black Hills State finished in 8th in the RMAC, above UC-Colorado Springs and Dixie State. 

 

The Grizzlies are 0-7 in the past six years against Black Hills State. The last time these two teams faced off was in Alamosa, where the Yellowjackets came out on top 76-51. The Grizzlies will tip off with Black Hills State at 5:30 p.m. in Spearfish, S.D. Friday, Dec. 13. 

 

Watching the Hardrockers 

South Dakota School of Mines moves into the weekend 1-2 in RMAC as well. The Hardrockers fell to Black Hills State and Westminster College, but came out on top against Dixie State 70-68 in overtime. The Hardrockers finished 13th in the RMAC last season. South Dakota School of Mines will first take on Fort Lewis Friday, Dec. 12 before challenging the Grizzlies. 

 

Last year when the Hardrockers and Grizzlies matched up, the Hardrockers came out on top 52-46. Historically the Grizzlies are 0-4 against South Dakota School of Mines. Adams State will take on the Hardrockers at 4 p.m. in Rapid City, S.D. Saturday, Dec. 14. 

 

Coming Up

The Grizzlies will take on Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colo. Saturday Dec. 21 at 5:30 p.m. This will be the first time the Grizzlies will take on the Skyhawks this season.
