Grizzlies Compete in Durango for Final Game Before the New Year

ALAMOSA, Colo. -- The Adams State Women's Basketball team travels to Durango, Colorado to take on the Skyhawks of Fort Lewis for their final game on the road before the New Year. Adams State heads into the weekend 1-9 overall, and 1-3 in RMAC. 

 

Adams State is coming off of two tough road losses in South Dakota to Black Hills State and South Dakota School of Mines. The Grizzlies are looking to bounce back this weekend facing some friendly and familiar competition in Durango, Colorado. 

 

Fort Lewis College comes in to the weekend 7-2 overall and 3-1 in RMAC play. The Skyhawks have faced the same competition as the Grizzlies this season. The Skyhawks had a three game win streak into last weekend when facing New Mexico Highlands, CSU-Pueblo, and South Dakota School of Mines. The Skyhawks most recently fell to the Yellowjackets of Black Hills State 66-74. 

 

The Grizzlies and Skyhawks have matched up a total of 20 times, with a historical record of 6-14. Most recently in 2018-2019 campaign, Adams State went 1-1 with Fort Lewis. The Grizzlies took down the Skyhawks on December 1st last year in Alamosa, winning a nail bitter, 65-63. Adams State then traveled to Durango, Colorado late in the season, where they fell 73-54. 

 

Adams State's offense is currently being led by senior, Zakiya Beckles and freshman, Laura Gutierrez. Beckles has tallied 97 points thus far in the season, with Gutierrez totaling 87. Beckles is also leading the Grizzlies with 17 steals on the season. Senior, Marshell Hollins is leading the team with 23 total assists and has totaled 42 rebounds. Makaela Ewing is also leading the Grizzlies with 42 rebounds. 

 

The Grizzlies will tip off with the Skyhawks at 5:30 in the Fort Lewis College Whalen Gym on Saturday, Dec. 21 in Durango, Colorado.
