SALT LAKE CITY - Adams State Men's Basketball kept its postseason hopes alive with a hard fought 75-70 road win Friday night at Westminster College. The win puts the Grizzlies record at 7-12 overall and back to .500 in the RMAC at 7-7.
For the night Adams State shot just under 50% from the floor on 25-51 made shots (49%). They were 7-18 from three-point range for 38.9% and shot 81.8% from the free throw line on 18-22 made attempts.
Davere Creighton had his second-best scoring night of the season with 29 points on 10-13 shooting. He was 5-7 from beyond the arc and grabbed five rebounds to help lead the Grizzlies to the five-point win.
The Grizzlies scored the first 10 points of the game to get up 10-0 early over the Griffins. The home looked to responded but the visitors matched each shot. In the first 5:15 of the game, the Grizzlies lead 19-9.
Despite the hot start from Adams State, Westminster managed to find some offensive groove and picked up the intensity on defense. With 9:06 to play in the half, Westminster took its first lead of the game, 22-21, thanks in part to a 13-2 run after trailing by 10.
John Dewey gave the Grizzlies the lead back, 23-22, with two made free throws. Following a defensive stop on the next possession,
Rickey Norris hit a three to make it a four-point lead for the Grizzlies.
The two teams traded shots down the final stretch of the first half before Creighton hit a pair of three pointers in the final 43 seconds of the half to give the Grizzlies a 44-40 advantage at the break.
Creighton's play in the first half was nearly flawless as he did not miss a single shot and had just one turnover and one foul in 18 minutes of play. He was a perfect 9-9 from the floor and 5-5 from deep. He had help asÂ
Shemar Johnson and Dewey each scored seven apiece for a combined 14 first half points.
Coming out of the break, the game continued to be close and the Griffins managed to tie the game at 50-all in the first five minutes. The Griffins grabbed their first lead of the half with 13:23 to play on a quick jumper to go up, 52-51.
In a five minute span of the second half there were seven lead changes and one tie. The Griffins finally got up by two possessions on a layup with 7:59 on the clock to lead 61-57.
The Griffins managed to lead by as much as six down the stretch but it did not last. Smart decision making from the Grizzlies help them make shots and draw contact get to the free throw line where they have done well this season.
Miles Banks tied the game at 65-all with a pair of made free throws with 3:26 left in regulation.
Following the two made shots from Banks, Creighton and Dewey took over for Adams State in the final three minutes of action. The duo scored the final 10 points to help lift the team past Westminster for the road win.
Creighton led the way in scoring with his game-high 29 points. He has now scored in double figures in 13 of the last 14 games and has posted 10-plus in each of his last six games. Dewey finished with 15 points and was a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line on the night. Johnson put up 13 points on 6-10 made shots. Norris led the team in rebounds with seven.
Alec Monson led the Griffins scoring efforts with 20 points on 8-13 made shots from the floor. He also had five boards but turned the ball over five times. Joonas Tahvanainen added 13 points off the bench. Behind him was Jake Connor and James McCord with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
The Grizzlies will look to earn another tough road win as they take on Dixie State tomorrow night, Feb. 2. The Trailblazers currently sit tied for eighth in the RMAC standings and are just one game ahead of the Grizzlies. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
