Slow Start Sets Grizzlies Back in Loss to Trailblazers

ALAMOSA, Colo. - The Grizzlies dropped the first game of their final homestand of the season, losing to the Dixie State Trailblazers 79-63. This loss brings the Grizzlies record to 2-20 overall and 2-16 in the RMAC.


The Grizzlies fell behind early and never recovered. The home squad worked to come back in the third quarter scoring 26, but was not able to continue the pace and fell to the Trailblazers.

Scoring came hard for the Grizzlies early. Zakiya Beckles opened up scoring with a pair of layups and a freethrow to make the score 5-7 with 7:30 left in the first.

This was the last points the home squad scoreed until :30 left in the quarter. In that time, Dixie State went on an 18-0 run. The score to close out the quarter was 25-7. The beginning of the second quarter went back and forth. Both teams trading shots most of the quarter.

Scoring opened up for Adams Statewith a Beckles layup early in the quarter. A Ki'asha Harris lay up followed by a Beckles three brought the Grizzlies within 15.

Adams State continued scoring with a Madison Merschel layup and the score was cut to 13 points

Dixie State went on a 13-5 run in the final 7:00 to close out the half with a score of 42-19. Beckles ledall Grizzly scorers with 10 at the half. Ali Franks for Dixie State led all scorers with 11 points at half.

Adams State heated up in the third quarter. Stephanie Ruiz started the scoring for Adams State with a jumper to be followed by a Brooke Neal three. After Dixie State responded with a second chance layup, Neal drove in for a layup then steal the ball and get fouled for two free throws.

Neal went 1-2 from the line only to go back the very next possession and go 2-2. This brought the score 48-29 with 6:00 left in the quarter.

The Grizzlies closed out the quarter lighting it up from three. Ruiz buried three 3's followed by a Beckles three. The score at the end of three was 60-45.

Dixie State opened up the fourth with a three to be followed by a Danielle Jimenez layup. Harris followed her up the next possession with a pair of free throws to bring the score within 14. That was the closest the Grizzlies got to the Trailbalzers.

Both teams went back-and-forth for the remainder of the quarter as the Grizzlies fall to the Trailblazers 79-63.

The Grizzlies had three players in double-digits with Brooke Neal leading the way with 18 points on 7-12 shooting, 1-3 from deep, and 3-5 at the free throw line. Beckles put in 15 on 6-14 from the floor and 2-9 from three. Ruiz scored 11 points on 4-12 from the floor and 3-7 from deep. Neal and Harris each grabbed 3 steals for the Grizzlies. As a team, the Grizzlies shot 33.8% from the floor going 22-65. From three, Adams went 6-22 totaling 27.3%. The Grizzlies went 13-16 from the line shooting 81.3%.

For the Trailblazers, Lisa VanCampen led the way with 21 points while Ali Franks added in 20. The team went 31-59 from the field shooting 52.5%. From deep, the Cougars went 8-22 totaling 36.4%. From the line, Dixie State went a perfect 9-9.

Adams State is back in action tomorrow night as they take on Westminister College for their final home game of the year. The game is set to tip off at 5:30. Three seniors will be honored before the game.
