DENVER - Adams State Softball got its final weekend of non-conference action started Saturday morning with a doubleheader against the Regis Rangers. The Grizzlies fell to the Rangers, 13-5, in six innings. Game two of the doubleheader was cancelled due to heavy snowfall on the field.
The Grizzlies (0-10) threatened early on to start the day and strung together a late rally but the Rangers (1-3) found a rhythm on offense late to hold off the Grizzlies off for their first win of the season.
Adams State finished the day with five runs on eight hits but four errors in the game came back to hurt the team. Regis posted 13 runs on 15 hits in six innings of work and had two errors of their own.
In the first inning, the Grizzlies got two runners on base but were not able to drive them in.
Samantha McDonald was hit by pitch to lead the inning she then stole second to get in scoring position while
Shelby Haskins got on base with a walk but the Rangers managed to escape the jam.
Jade Garbiso got the defense going for the Grizzlies right away with a three up, three down bottom half of the inning which in turn got the offense on the right footing for their first run of the game to grab a 1-0 lead.
Julia Jimenez hit a leadoff single that hugged the right field line to stay fair. Two batters later,
Baylie Fryar doubled to left field for the two-out rally and brought Jimenez home for the RBI. McDonald looked to keep things rolling with a single through the left side but was caught in a rundown to end the frame.
Garbiso once again rewarded the team with her superb work in the circle with her second straight 1-2-3 inning. The Grizzlies got a runner on base to start the third but the Rangers stalled the Grizzlies offense to keep the game at 1-0.
Regis had its bats come to life in the bottom half of the third and scored four runs to grab a 4-1 lead. Four hits from the home squad and an Adam State error helped produce the four runs. Macy Cox scored the first run after a leadoff walk and back-to-back steals got her to third. A RBI single drove her in to tie the game 1-1 before Regis added the next three.
The Rangers held the Grizzlies scoreless in the top of the fourth and added three more run in the bottom half of the inning to grab a commanding 7-1 lead. A leadoff walk got a runner on for the Rangers. A single and a throwing error got runners to second and third for the Rangers.
The Grizzlies managed to get an out at home on a fielder's choice in the next at bat but the Rangers then got a two RBI single to right field to drive in two runs to go up 6-1. The final run immediately came on the next at bat thanks in part to a RBI double to center field.
A four run inning from the Grizzlies to start the fifth gave the team a second chance as their scoring run cut the Rangers lead to just two, 7-5. Fryar led off with a single up the middle. McDonald then got on from a fielder's choice and both runners advanced on a throwing error.
Angel Micciulli drove in Fryar for the unearned run on a RBI single through the left side.
The second Rangers error of the day came on a fielding error that got
Sarah Rocha on base and allowed McDonald to score the unearned run and cut the game's score to 7-3.
Mercedes Salazar put up the next two Grizzly runs with a two RBI single up the middle to score Rocha and pinch runner
Kyrah Archibald.
Trailing by two runs, Adams State was within striking distance of Regis. It was short lived as the home team scored five runs on four hits and got help with two errors from the visitors. Both errors came back-to-back to start the bottom of the fifth.
The Rangers then got a walk and three hits in the next five at bats to score two runs and push their lead to 10-5. With two outs, the Grizzlies looked to end the inning to stay within five runs but the Rangers rallied for two more hits to score two more runs before fifth came to a close.
A leadoff single for
Sarah Hansen in the sixth was the final hit for the Grizzlies as the Rangers got three straight outs on back-to-back fielder's choices and a groundout. The Rangers final run to end the game an inning early came on four hits but as the runner crossed home plate on a wild pitch.
Fryar finished the game 2-3 with a run scored and a RBI to lead Adams State. Salazar was 1-3 with two RBI, while Jimenez also went 1-3 and scored a run. Hansen tied the team lead in hits with two in three at bats. Garbiso suffered the loss to move to 0-5. She work 3.2 innings and fanned two batters.
Angel Apodaca led the Rangers hitting with 3-4 batting performance with two runs scored and three RBI. Nelson went 2-4 with two runs scored. Tori Brown also had two hits in three plate appearances and tallied three RBI. Carly Beard was a perfect 2-2 with two runs scored and a RBI. Cox was 1-3 with two runs scored a tallied four stolen bases. Taylor Armitage picked up the win in the circle to move to 1-2. She pitched the whole game, allowed just one earned run, and struck out three batters.
