Adams State Swept By Rangers On the Road

DENVER - Adams State Softball had a tough outing on Sunday afternoon as the team dropped a pair of games to Regis University on the road to close out the non-conference portion of their schedule.

The Grizzlies (0-12) fell 10-2 in the first game and 5-4 in the second game as the Rangers secured three wins over the weekend to improve to 3-3 on the year. For the afternoon, the Grizzlies totaled six runs on four hits with no errors in either game. The Rangers produced 15 runs on 19 hits with four errors combined.

Game one saw the Rangers hold the Grizzlies scoreless for the first five innings, while scoring seven in that span. A RBI double from Tori Brown to center field scored Allyah Martinez to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead.

The Grizzlies managed to force two outs in the bottom of the second against the Rangers but Kynra Nelson singled and stole second to get in scoring position. Martinez then plated her home with a RBI double to right center.

Regis drove in two more runs in the third to grab a 4-0 lead. Laura Scheffel added the first run with a single to left field to bring home Macy Cox. Two batters later the bases were loaded for Regis and they added the second run of the inning as Jessi Case was walked for the RBI.

Following a scoreless fourth inning, the Rangers plated three runs. Cox led off with a double and was immediately brought home on a Scheffel RBI double. Two Batters later Nelson drove in Scheffel for the six run of the game. The third run of the inning came on a sacrifice fly.

The Grizzlies two runs came in the top of the sixth. Breanna Shaffer was walked and made it to third thanks in part to a Zoe Munn double. A passed ball and a throwing error from the Rangers scored Munn and Shaffer to bring the score to 7-2.

The Rangers added three runs in the sixth to close out the game with an eight-run victory. The three runs came on two hits and with the help of a passed ball and wild pitch.

Four Grizzlies each tallied one hit in the game. Munn led the way going 1-3 with a run scored. Angel Micciulli, Sarah Rocha, and Rebecca Wood also got a hit in the game. Jade Garbiso suffered the loss in the circle to move to 0-6. She and Brittany Phillips each worked over two innings and both had a strikeout.

Nelson led the Ranger hitting 3-4 in game one with three RBI and a run scored.. Martinez finished 2-3 with a run scored and a RBI. Cox, Scheffel, and Carly Beard all had two hits in the game, while Scheffel tallied two RBI and scored three runs. Maisie Mortimer worked the whole game to improve to 1-1. She fanned three batters for the game.
 

Game two was a back-and-forth affair between the two squads. The Grizzlies led 4-3 going into the fifth inning but a late rally from the Rangers help them secure a 5-4 win and the series sweep. The game was called after fifth due to dropping temperatures and increased snowfall.

The top of the Adams State order went 1-2-3 as Regis looked grab the lead early in the bottom of the first. The home squad managed to knock two hits in the inning but a runner was left on base to keep the game scoreless. 

Shelby Haskins led off the top of the second with a walk and then got to second on a throwing error. Sarah Hansen moved her to third with a single up the middle and Alyssa Berteaux-Solorzano plated Haskins home with a RBI single through the right side. the Grizzlies threatened with more potential runs but two runners were left stranded.

Lauara Scheffel immediately tied the game with solo home run in the bottom of the second inning to left field. Defense picked up for both squads in the third as they held each other scoreless to keep the game notched at a 1-1 tie.

The Grizzlies retook the lead in the top of the fourth with three runs scored on three hits and with the help of a Rangers error. Hansen led off with a base hit before Breanna Shaffer pinch ran for her. Solorzano got her to third with a single before a fielding error scored Shaffer and got runners to second and third.

Following a pinch running substitution by Adams State, Kenzie Lange plated home the two runs, both unearned, with a two RBI double to left field. It was the last time the Grizzlies scored as the Rangers responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth to stay within one run, 4-3.

The Rangers final two runs of the game came in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run homer from Angel Apodaca to bring the final score to 5-4. With the inclement weather picking up at the field and in the area, the game was called early.

Solorzano went 2-2 for the game with a RBI. Lange and Haskins both were 1-2. Lange had two RBI, while Haskins scored a run. Hansen also had two hits on the day in three plate appearances. Jade Garbiso suffered the loss to move to 0-7. She pitched 3.1 innings and struck out one batter.

Scheffel led the Rangers going a perfect 2-2 with three RBI and two runs scored. Apodaca was 2-3 with a run scored and two RBI. Both players had a home run for the game as well. Taylor Armitage picked up the win in the circle to move to 2-2 after pitching the whole game. She struck out three batters in five innings of work.
