Grizzlies Upset On the Road By Mountaineers

GUNNISON, Colo. – Adams State Men's Basketball suffered a tough upset loss in overtime Friday night on the road as they fell 87-86 in overtime to rival Western Colorado.

The Grizzlies (10-15, 10-10 RMAC) entered the weekend sitting eighth in the conference standings. The loss now puts them in a two-way tie for eighth with Chadron State who owns the head-to-head match-up.

The Mountaineers (5-21, 2-18 RMAC) pulled off the upset in overtime after not being able to hold a lead late in the second half that forced the contest into extra minutes.

In the first five minutes of action both teams traded shots with neither leading by more than four points. John Dewey made it a 17-11 lead for the Grizzlies with 14:50 on the clock, but a quick Mountaineer triple made it 17-14.

The back-and-forth affair never really settled as both squads refused to allow the other to create any sizable lead in the first half.

The Mountaineers put up 49 first half points on a 48.6 shooting percentage. They were 17-35 and went 6-13 from three-point range for 46.2%. Helping them lead 49-42 at the break was 14 bench points while the Grizzlies did not have any.

The Grizzlies were almost identical in shooting stats going 17-39 for 43.6% and were 5-13 from deep for 38.5%. They did own the edge in rebounds, 52-40.

Western Colorado led by as much as nine in the first four minutes but quick answers from Adams State kept the game within reach early on.

The Mountaineers looked to stay in front late down the stretch but the Grizzlies slowly chipped away at the lead until a pair of Davere Creighton free throws tied the game at 75-all late in the second half.

Both teams had opportunities late to put each other away but neither was successful as the game went into overtime. 10 points in overtime was just enough for the home team as they took down the Grizzlies by one for the upset win.

Dewey led all scorers with a game-high 32 points on the night. He finished 11-27 shooting, while going 6-16 from three-point range and 4-4 from the free throw line. Creighton had a double-double with 20 points and 15 rebounds. Shemar Johnson also put up 20 points, while Rickey Norris chipped in 10 points. Norris and Dewey also had nine rebounds apiece.

Brady Subart led the Mountaineers in scoring with 23 points and dished out a game-high six assists. Jackson Ehrlin added 19 points while James Willis posted 15 points. Monroe Porter led all players with a game-high 16 boards.

The Grizzlies will travel to Grand Junction, Colo. to take on Colorado Mesa on Saturday, Feb. 23. Tip-off against the Mavericks is set for 7:30 p.m.
