GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Adams State Women's Basketball dropped a 65-47 contest on the road to No. 22 Colorado Mesa Saturday night. The loss puts the Grizzlies record at 2-23 and 2-19 in the RMAC.
The Mavericks (22-3, 19-2 RMAC) got out to a fast start against the Grizzlies and shot an even 40% on the night on 24-60 made shots. Defensively, they held the Grizzlies to 16-51 shooting for a percentage of 31.4.
The Grizzlies got off to another slow start scoring just eight points in the opening frame of the contest. They scored six of their first eight points in the first three minutes to lead the Mavericks by one, 6-5. The home team responded by outscoring the visitors 17-2 to close out the quarter.
Adams State found more of an offensive rhythm in the second quarter and put up 11 points, but Colorado Mesa carried its momentum from the first into the second and scored 21 points. Back-to-back 20-point quarters helped CMU maintain its double figure lead for the majority of the night.
Stephanie Ruiz put up seven first half points to lead the way for the Grizzlies but the team was just 8-28 shooting in the first half for 28.6%. The Mavericks shot 14-31 for 35.2% in the first half, and was 4-9 from three-point range as they led 43-19 at the break.
Coming out of the break, the Grizzlies outscored the Mavericks 28-22 in the second half but it was not enough as the home team held on for the 18-point win.
Defensively, the Grizzlies held the Mavericks to just 34.5% shooting in the second half and 2-11 shooting from deep.
Ruiz scored 10 second half points to finish with 17 to lead Adams State. She shot 6-10 from the field, while going 3-5 from beyond the arc.
Brooke Neal chipped in nine points and was a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line.
Marshell Hollins added eight points and led all players with a game-high 11 rebounds.
Kylyn Rigsby was the leading scorer for CMU with 17 points on 7-9 shooting. Tori Catlett put up 10 points off the bench and was a perfect 4-4 shooting for the night. Karina Brandon grabbed the most rebounds with eight.
The Grizzlies will close out the season next Friday, March 1 at Fort Lewis College. Tip-off against the Skyhawks will be at 5:30 p.m. in Durango, Colo.
