ALAMOSA, Colo. – Adams State Wrestling competes in the final dual of the regular season with the hopes of claiming a share of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Title. Standing in the Grizzlies way is rival Western Colorado.
The Grizzlies enter the weekend with a 601 record overall and are 5-1 against RMAC opponents. The Grizzlies can claim a share of the RMAC crown with a win over the Mountaineers on Saturday. They are currently tied for second with CSU-Pueblo with the dual record but can tie for first with Colorado School of Mines.
The Orediggers closed out the regular season Wednesday night with a 23-11 dual win over Colorado Mesa to finish the season 11-3 overall and 6-1 in the RMAC. The Orediggers defeated the Grizzlies earlier this season but fell to CSU-Pueblo late in the year. The Grizzlies defeated the ThunderWolves earlier this year which sets up the potential for a three-way share of the conference crown.
The Grizzlies still have plenty to compete for as they prepare to take on archrival Western Colorado on Saturday and then head to Golden for the closing tournament in Golden, Colo. at the Rocky Mountain Collegiate Open. What remains on the line against Western is very simple: win, and end the season with a share of the RMAC title. Also included in the win will be bragging rights in what many consider long time rivalry between two historically solid RMAC programs.
The Grizzlies have reeled off seven in a row since their last loss, and have ripped through the conference since then. A win at Western and sole retention of second place would cap off an incredibly special regular season for the Adams State grapplers, and they would have plenty to show for it.
While Adams State ranks 31st nationally in tournament play, they sit ranked seventh in duals with 112 points. That mark is the best in the RMAC, and an impressive ranking for the Grizzlies to hang their hats on.
Individually,
Darek Huff is ranked fifth nationally in the 133-pound weight class, and he prepares for his final dual of the year before heading to regionals and nationals. He is the highest ranked Grizzly in any class and is the lone Adams State grappler in the NCAA Division 2 Top 12.
This impressive dual rank makes this weekend that much more important, as the Grizzlies look to close out with another victory and perhaps even move up in the final rankings. They will need all hands-on deck for one final push to the finish, as others look to make a big splash at Western this weekend with hopes of attaining regional and national success.
The dual against Western Colorado kicks off at 7 p.m. Saturday night, Feb. 9 from the Paul Wright Gym in Gunnison. Sunday, Feb. 9 the Grizzlies will also send athletes to Golden for the Rocky Mountain Collegiate Open Tournament. Competition begins at 10 a.m. from the Russell K. Volk Gymnasium at the Colorado School of Mines.
