Grizzlies Fall at Home to Rangers

ALAMOSA, Colo. - The Adams State Women's basketball team dropped itd fourth straight game Friday night falling to the Regis Rangers 93-57. This loss brings the Grizzlies record to 2-18 overall and 2-14 in the RMAC.

The Grizzlies came out strong to begin the first quarter keeping the game within six at the first horn. The second quarter would set the tone for the rest of the night with the Rangers going up big and never looking back.

Regis owned the second half, scoring 57 points in the final two quarters to secure the win for the away squad.

Scoring for the Grizzlies started off with a made three by Stephanie Ruiz. Regis would get the lead up to 10-3 before the Grizzlies would come back. Marshell Hollins starting a 9-0 run with a made and ASU took the lead on a Ki'asha Harris layup making it 12-10 prompting a Rangers timeout.

Both teams would go back and forth scoring until the Rangers went on a 6-0 run to close out the first quarter of play. At the end of the first quarter the Rangers led 20-14.

The second quarter started slow for the Grizzlies, being held scoreless for the first four minutes of the quarter. The Rangers pushed the score 24-14 before Zakiya Beckles hit a jumper to break the scoreless streak.

The Rangers pushed the lead to 15 before a Beckles three brought it back to 12 points. Hollins closed out the scoring for the half with a layup and the foul converting the and-one. Regis then extended their lead to as much as 19 before the second frame ended. Going into the half, the Rangers led 38-22.

Ruiz led scoring for the Grizzlies at the half putting up six points on a pair of three pointers. Hollins and Beckles each added in five points. Whitney Jacob and Elly Walters each posted nine points for the Rangers.

Scoring opened up the second half for the Grizzlies with another three from Ruiz. Regis responded with a three of their own making the score 44-25. Adams State quickly answered with a three-point play by Brooke Neal driving to the basket through contact for the made shot and making the free throw.

The Rangers and Grizzlies went back-and-forth until the 2:45 mark when Regis went on an eight-point run to go up by 29 points with :16 left in the 3rd quarter. A layup by Kassie Schell and two made free throws cut the deficit to 25 and closed out the quarter with the Grizzlies trailing 64-39.

The fourth quarter saw the Rangers continue to shoot well from the floor. The Rangers extended their lead to 35 points three minutes into the final frame before Shell hit a shot from deep. Following a pair of free throws by Regis, another three was added by Danielle Jimenez who had three triples on the day.

After a pair of three pointers of their own, Regis hit their game high lead of 40 points before back-to-back threes by Savana Geringer and Jimenez brought that lead to 34 with less than a minute left. The final score of ended in the Rangers favor, 93-57.

Jimenez was the only player to hit double digits with 10 points on 3-4 shooting from deep and 1-2 from the free throw line. Hollins tallied up five steals in the contest. As a team, the Grizzlies shot 29.3% from the floor going 17-58. From three, Adams State went 9-27 totaling 33.3%. They went 14-18 from the line shooting 77.8%.

For the Rangers, Jacob led the way with 20 points while Alex Nelson added in 10. The team went 28-54 from the field shooting 51.9%. From deep, the Rangers went 14-27 totaling 51.9%. From the line, Regis went 23-24 going 95.8%.

Adams State is back in action tomorrow night as they take on Colorado Christian Cougars at 5:30 p.m. in Plachy Hall. Adams State won in their previous matchup 67-48 on the road.
