Adams State Goes 0-2 on Day One of Angelo State Tournament

SAN ANGELO, Texas – Adams State Softball had a rough start on day one of the ASU George & Ola McCorkle Challenge as they went 0-2 and produced just one run to start the tournament.

The Grizzlies (0-5) fell in both games in early innings as they had just five hits on the day managed just one run scored. Game one saw Adams State take on Texas A&M International (3-5). The Dustdevils got out to a fast start scoring nine runs to lead the Grizzlies 9-0 right away.

The Grizzlies allowed six straight hits, including a home run and two doubles, which led to a quick 4-0 lead for the Dustdevils. Three more hits hat produced five more run helped the Dustdevils lead 9-0 after one.

The Grizzlies got runners on in the bottom of the inning when Sarah Rocha was walked. She managed to get to second on a Shelby Haskins single and advanced to third on the throw but was left stranded.

Texas A&M International added one run, unearned, in the second to lead 10-0. Neither team did much the next two innings but added one run each in the fifth. The Dustdevils added their final run of the game in the top of the inning thanks in part to three hits to go up 11-0.

The Grizzlies one run of the day was scored by Kenzie Lange. She got on base with an error from the shortstop. Following a pair of ground outs that got her to third she was brought home on an RBI single from Rebecca Wood.

Wood was the only player with multiple hits for the Grizzlies going 2-3 with an RBI. Lange finished 1-2 and scored a run. Haskins also went 1-2. Jade Garbiso (0-4) got the start in the circle and work three complete innings. Both her a reliever Taylor Sandoval had one strikeout on the day, respectively.

Maya Paul was the top hitter for the Dustdevils going 3-4 two RBI and a run scored. Madidison Schofield and Alyssa Contreras both finished 2-2 with three RBI each. Melanie Lint got the win in the circle to improve to 1-1. She pitched all five innings and allowed just four hits and one earned run.
 

Game two did not go much better for Adams State as the team fell 8-0 in five innings to host school and No. 6-ranked Angelo State. The Rambelles (6-1) scored all eight runs in the first three innings with all eight coming by way of home runs to secure the win. They worked 1-2-3 innings in four of the five frames against the Grizzlies.

The first inning saw the Belles score two runs on two hits after going three up three down to start the game. Following a leadoff single, a two-run homer two batters later gave the home team a 2-0 lead.

The Grizzlies one hit of the game came in the top of the second on a Brittany Phillips single through the right side to lead off the inning. The Grizzlies managed to get runners in scoring position but both were left stranded.

Angelo State added two runs in the second inning on another two-run homer to bring the score to 4-0 going into the third. The final four runs all came in the third as the belles needed just three hits to add the four runs and secure the win. A three-run homer to right field made it 7-0, before a solo home run to center brought the score to 8-0.

Phillips went 1-2 on the day to lead the Grizzlies offense. Phillips also got the start in the circle (0-1) and pitched 2.2 innings. Taylor Sandoval had the most walks with three.

Courtney Barnell led the Belles offense with two hits in three at bats to go along with three runs scored, a home run and a RBI. Taylor Fogle went 2-2 with a homer, two RBI, and a run scored. MyKayla Stroud had the other home run and was 2-3 with three RBI and a run scored. Meagan Hill got to win to move to 4-0. She pitched the whole game and fanned six batters.

The Grizzlies will look to bounce back on day two of the tournament as they will face the same two teams yet again. They start the day against The Dustdevils with the first pitch set for 10:30 a.m. They will face the Belles at 3 p.m. to close out the day.
