Grizzlies Stumble on Day One Against Mavericks

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Adams State Softball suffered a pair of tough losses on Saturday afternoon to No. 18 Colorado Mesa. The Grizzlies two losses put their record at 6-24 overall and 6-12 in the RMAC.

Both games ended with the same final score and early. The Mavericks (22-6, 15-3 RMAC) put up nine runs in both games to end the action early. Their offense, combined with solid pitching and defense, never allowed the Grizzlies to get anything going in either contest.

Game one saw Colorado Mesa score its nine runs on nine hits while keeping a clean sheet in the errors section. Adams State did not commit any errors as well but had just two hits in five innings of play.

The Grizzlies first hit came from Samantha McDonald on a one-out single to left field. She managed to get to second on a stolen base but was ultimately left stranded.

Pitcher Brittany Phillips started the first with back-to-back outs but then walked the next batter. A triple and a single from the Mavericks helped them lead 2-0 before the Grizzlies closed out the inning.

CMU went three up, three down to start the second and led off the bottom of the inning with a double before a single got two runners on base. The third run for the home squad came a stolen base at home to make it a 3-0 game.

The Mavericks worked a second straight 1-2-3 inning in the third and scored three more runs to lead 6-0. The first run came on a solo leadoff homer to center field. The next batter was walked and two batters later a two-run shot to center field yet again made it a six-run lead for the Mavericks.

The final hit of game one for the Grizzlies came in the top of the fourth as Shelby Haskins hit a two-out double to left field. The Grizzlies then worked a 1-2-3 inning of their own to close out the fourth inning.

A 1-2-3 inning to start the fifth kept the Grizzlies from building any momentum. The Mavericks then got a double and a single to get runners on base. The game was ended on a three-run homer to center field to give the Mavericks the 9-0 win.

McDonald and Haskins each went 1-2 to lead the Adams State offense. In the circle, Phillips (2-6) pitched the whole game and had nine forceouts to go along with two groundouts.

Alexa Samuels had a solid game going 2-3 with two runs scored and five RBI. AnnMarie Torres went a perfect 2-2 scored two runs to go along with a RBI. Jordyn Hays was finished 2-3 with a RBI and scored a run. Kimbri Herring went the whole game in the circle to move to 8-3. She fanned four batters in the win.

Game two whistled the same tune for the Mavericks as they ended the game early with another 9-0 win. Four runs in each of the first two innings helped the home team earn the day one sweep.

The Grizzlies added just three hits in the second game and also had three errors in the loss. The Mavericks scored their nine runs on 13 hits and once again did not have any errors.

The Mavericks added four runs in the first frame on six hits and with the help of two errors from the Grizzlies. Two hits in the first three at bats made it a 1-0 game early. A double got two runs in scoring position before a wild pitch and a throw error from the catcher made it a 3-0 edge for the home team.

A solo home run added the fourth run for CMU and the team threatened with two more hits and a fielder's choice before Adams State ended the inning.

The Mavericks pitching and defense then worked a 1-2-3 inning to start the second to get back on the offensive quickly. Four runs on four hits and one Grizzlies error gave the Mavericks a commanding 8-0 lead going into the third.

The first run of the second came on a RBI double to right field to make it 5-0 lead. Two batters later a single up the middle scored two runs to bring the Mavericks lead to seven. A sacrifice fly to left field added the eighth run for the Mavericks to give them an 8-0 edge.

The final CMU run was scored in the fourth frame. A one-out single and a two-out RBI triple scored the ninth run for the home team to give them a 9-0 lead. Adams State threatened with two hits in the fifth but never made anything of it.

Zoe Munn, Brittany Phillips, and Mercedes Salazar all had a hit in the game finishing 1-2, respectively. Jade Garbiso (2-13) pitched game two and had seven forceouts to go along with four groundouts.

Alexa Samuels led the Mavericks going a perfect 3-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Kellie Mrofcza was 2-3 with two runs scored and a RBI. McKenzie Surface picked up the win in the circle to stay undefeated at 10-0. She had five strikeouts in the win.
