GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Adams State Softball suffered another tough setback in a 9-0 loss to No. 18 Colorado Mesa in five innings. Game two was cancelled due to heavy rainfall.
The Grizzlies (6-25, 6-13 RMAC) once again was unable to get any offense going as they managed just two hits in the game. The Mavericks (23-6, 16-3 RMAC) tallied nine runs on seven hits to end the game in five innings and earn the series sweep, 3-0.
The first Adams State hit came in the opening frame as
Samantha McDonald got the one-out base hit up the middle. She looked to get herself in better scoring position but was caught stealing at second base.
The Mavericks got a runner on base thanks in part to a walk but never managed a hit in the first inning. The Grizzlies got two runners on in the second on a walk a fielding error but a lightning delay then paused the game for roughly 30 minutes.
Following the delay, the Mavericks then got their third foul out of the inning to keep the game scoreless. A leadoff single and stolen base got a runner to second for the Mavericks. A groundout and a sacrifice fly scored the runner to end the scoreless setup and give the home team a 1-0 advantage.
Colorado Mesa worked a 1-2-3 frame to start the third and added two more runs with just one hit. A leadoff walk a stolen base got things started. A RBI triple made it a 2-0 game. Another walk got a runner one before a sacrifice fly scored the runner at third to give the Mavericks a 3-0 lead.
The only other hit for the Grizzlies came in the top of the fourth inning as
Julia Jimenez knocked a double to left field. The Mavericks then answered with six runs on four hits to grab a 9-0 lead.
Helping Colorado Mesa added its final three six runs were a pair of RBI doubles, and a three-run homer to left center field. Adams State looked to extend the game but a three up, three down inning ended the contest in five frames.
Jimenez and McDonald each had a hit in the game, while Jimenez drew a walk.
Brittany Phillips suffered the loss in the circle to move to 2-7.
Kellie Mrofcza led the Mavericks offense going 2-3 with two runs batted in and two runs scored. Kaila Jacobi finished 1-2 with four RBI and one run scored. Brooke Doumer also went 1-2 with two runs scored and two RBI. Kimbri Herring suffered the win in the circle to move to 9-3. She fanned three batters in the win.
The Grizzlies will return home next weekend to host the MSU Denver Roadrunners in a RMAC series on March 30-31. First pitch on day one is set for 12 p.m. at the ASU Softball Field.
