GOLDEN, Colo. – Adams State Baseball dropped its second game in as many days to Colorado School of Mines to fall to 0-2 in the conference series.
The Grizzlies (6-22, 3-11 RMAC) and Orediggers (17-8, 8-6 RMAC) were originally set to play a doubleheader but inclement weather affected the field. Mother Nature ultimately forced the two squads to play a single nine-inning contest.
Both teams came out strong on defense to start the game. The Grizzlies got a base hit to start the action but the Orediggers kept them at bay. The home team then got a runner on by a hit by pitch but made nothing of it.
The game's first runs for both teams came in the second inning to knot the score at 1-all going into the third. A leadoff hit from
Logan Bistrup got him on base and a single from
Orlando Romero got him to third. A RBI groundout from
Dakota Solis scored Bistrup to give Adams State a 1-0 edge.
The Orediggers answered at the bottom of the inning on a one-out single up the middle. Two batters later a RBI double to left field scored the home team's first run and tied the game at 1-1. The game remained tied until the fourth inning when the Orediggers put up five unanswered runs to lead 6-1.
Mines offense found its rhythm in the fourth frame scoring its five runs on four hits. A triple, double, and a home run quickly opened up the game and gave Mines a 4-1 advantage. A two RBI single added the next two runs to give Mines a five-run lead going into the fifth.
The Grizzlies got two runners on base in the fifth on a double and a walk, but it was not enough as both were left stranded. The Orediggers then scored a pair of runs after two batters were walked and a two RBI double scored both to extend the lead to 8-1.
The scored remained at 8-1 in Mines favor until the seventh inning. A leadoff triple got a batter on and a sacrifice fly scored him to make it a 9-1 lead for the home squad. Mines added its final run in the eighth with three hits in five at bats to grab a 10-1 lead in the game.
The Grizzlies added three runs in the final inning of play thanks to a pair of hits and errors to bring the final to 10-4. Solis scored the first run on a wild pitch after getting on base from a walk.
Erik Hildebrandt then plated home
Patrick Huffaker to make it a 10-3 game.
A single from
Nico Nintze kept the series alive and a fielding error from the home squad got him to second. The error also helped Hildebrandt score the unearned run to cut Mines lead to six, 10-4. It remained that score following a pitching change that helped Mines get the final out and take game two.
Nintze had the most hits for Adams State finishing 3-5 for the game. Both Hildebrandt and Bistrup went 2-4 with a run scored, while Hildebrandt also had a RBI.
Daniel Brennan took the loss on the hill to move to 0-6. He fanned eight batters in four innings of work.
Trevor Howad finished 3-4 with four RBI and two runs scored to lead Mines. Joe Popp was 3-5 with two RBI, while Jace Selsor went 1-4 with three RBI. Danny McDermott was 2-3 with two runs scored. Walter Pennington secured the win on the mound to improve to 5-1. He pitched seven innings and struck out 12 batters in the win.
With Mother Nature affecting the series on day two, the Grizzlies and Orediggers will now play a doubleheader on Sunday, March 31. Both games will be seven innings with the first pitch set for 12 p.m.
