Grizzlies Drop Doubleheader Set to Orediggers

GOLDEN, Colo. – Adams State Baseball is unable to avoid the series sweep for the second straight weekend after falling in doubleheader action Sunday afternoon on the road to Colorado School of Mines.

The 7-2 win in game one and 3-1 victory in game two helped the Orediggers secure the 4-0 series sweep to improve to 19-8 overall and 10-6 in the RMAC. The Grizzlies now sit at 6-24 overall and 3-13 in the RMAC.

The Grizzlies battled with the Orediggers early on in game one but after scoring one run in the opening inning they were held scoreless the next five inning. The Orediggers led 2-1 after two innings and extended the lead scoring at least one run over the next four frames.

The first Adams State run was scored by Erik Hildebrandt. He led off with a walk and a sacrifice bunt from Jake Angelopulos got him to second. He then stole third and crossed home plate on a wild pitch to make it a 1-0 game.

Mines responded shortly after ending the top of the inning with two runs scored on a trio of hits to grab the 2-1 advantage. A single and a double got runners in scoring position for Mines before a RBI sacrifice fly and a single scored both runners before the frame ended.

The Grizzlies looked to answer in the second but managed just a single hit and left a runner on base. The Orediggers looked to extend their lead but defense was the theme as they also managed just a single hit while leaving a pair of runners on base.

A leadoff single from Angelopulos seemed to get the Grizzlies on the right track to start the third but Nico Nintze lined into a double play before Jared Gay popped up to first base to end the inning. The Orediggers then hit a leadoff homer to push their lead to 3-1 entering the fourth.

Defense continued to play in Mines favor as the team worked a 1-2-3 inning to get the offense back out quickly. It paid off as the home team added two more runs on a trio of hits and with the help of a throwing error to push the lead to four, 5-1.

The Orediggers kept the Grizzlies offense at bay yet again with a second straight three up, three down inning. They then knocked two doubles to score their sixth run of the game and lead 6-1.

The Grizzlies once again struggled to find an offensive rhythm and got just one hit in the top of the sixth inning before the Orediggers closed it out. They once again added their seventh and final run of the game with another set of doubles.

The final run for the Grizzlies came in the seventh inning. Paul Giglio got on base thanks to a muffed throw from the pitcher. He got second on a groundout from Noah Befus and was plated home on a RBI single from Billy Ryan.

Ryan led the Grizzlies bats going 2-3 with a RBI. Nintze and Angelopulos also had a hit in game one. Troy Gutbub went six complete innings in the loss to move to 2-4. In six innings of work he fanned a game-high six batters.

Five players for Mines all had two hits in game one with four going 2-3. Joe Popp was 2-4 with two RBI, while Mikey Gangwich was 2-3 with two runs scored, one RBI, and a home run to lead Mines. Owen Pigati picked up the win on the bump to improve to 1-1. He pitched five innings and struck out a game-high six batters.

Game two saw defensive play pick up for both squads as the Grizzlies and Orediggers combined for just four runs in the seven innings. The Orediggers completed the sweep with the 3-1 win.

Mines struck first this time around with one run in the bottom of the first after holding Adams State hitless. Back-to-back walks got runners for the home team before a RBI double to right field scored plated home the lone run.

Starter Dalton Carleo then fanned the next three batters to keep two runners stranded. The Grizzlies tied the game at 1-all in the second. Noah Befus led off with a double and advanced to third on the groundout from Logan Bistrup. He crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly from Paul Giglio.

The third inning found no offensive production from either squad. Mines got two hits but managed nothing from it. Adams State did not got get any hits but managed to get a runner on from an error.

The Grizzlies once again failed to get a hit to start the fourth while two errors from the Orediggers got a runner on base and to third but he was left stranded. A pair of base hits from the Orediggers in the bottom of the fourth along with a sacrifice bunt scored their second run to bring the score to 2-1.

Both teams were held scoreless in the fifth to keep the score at 2-1. The Grizzlies knocked their final hit of the game in the sixth on a single from Nico Nintze. The Orediggers added the game's final run in the bottom of the inning to secure the 3-1 win.

A one-out walk got a runner on for Mines and a double immediately after plated the run home. Mines then closed out the seventh inning with a 1-2-3 inning to close the series out and secure the sweep.
