Grizzlies Top Cowgirls in Final Day of Competition

Las Vegas, N.M. – The Adams State Grizzlies take the final two of the four game series against New Mexico Highlands with another close eight inning game, winning 8-7, and huge victory, 9-1.
 
The Cowgirls opened the game with an early lead, hitting a three-run homerun in the bottom of the first inning.
 
After a quiet second inning, the Grizzlies responded in the top of the second inning. Jade Garbiso got her first homerun of the year, hitting to left field bringing in Hannah Wirtjes with her. The Grizzlies trailed 2-3 moving in to the bottom of the third. Garbiso then hit the circle in the bottom half of the inning, facing three batters.
 
After another quiet inning, the Grizzlies took the lead in the top of the fifth. Garbiso hit a lead-off double to left center. Samantha McDonald was walked to get on base. Sarah Rocha singled through the right side to score two runs. The Grizzlies led 4-3 going in to the bottom of the fifth.
 
New Mexico Highlands started the inning with a lead-off walk, followed by a strikeout. The Cowgirls got another aboard reaching on a walk. A single through the left side gave New Mexico Highlands the lead back 5-4.
 
Zoe Munn led off the top of the sixth, hitting a single to left field, then advancing to second on a fielding error. Baylie Fryar came in to pinch hit, and doubled to left center, scoring Munn. With the score tied at five, Fryar advanced to third on a wild pitch. Garbiso walked, and Rachel Mobley came in to pinch run. Angel Micciulli double to left center to score two, taking the lead back, 7-5.
 
New Mexico Highlands responded in the bottom of the seventh, leading off with a single to left field. The Cowgirls hit a two-run homerun to left field to tie the game and send it in to extra innings.
 
Adams State took the pressure well, leading off with a homerun from Fryar to regain the lead 8-7.
 
Brittany Phillips had a wonderful eighth inning, with two strike outs and a ground out to close the game and get the win.
 
Fryar and Garbisio were big hitters for the Grizzlies in game one. Fryar went 2-2 with a homerun and 2 RBI. Garbiso went 3-3 with a homerun and 2 RBI. Garbiso also went six innings with five strikeouts.


New Mexico Highlands was the first on the board in the bottom of the first. With a lead-off walk, the cowgirls reached on a fielder's choice, and advancing their runner to second. Hitting in to three fielder's choices, the Cowgirls receive one tally on the scoreboard.
 
Adams State responded with three straight singles to the outfield from Fryar, Phillips and Sarah Hansen, which scored one.
 
The score remained tied at one until the top of the third inning. Micciulli started the inning with a lead-off walk. McDonald bunted and advanced Micciulli to second. Rocha singled from a bunt, moving both batters up. Shelby Haskins came in with no outs and the bases loaded, singling to left field to score two.
 
The Grizzlies kept their lead of two moving in to the top of the fourth. Hansen hit a lead-off single to the shortstop. Jasmine Parker came in to pinch run, and was advanced to second by Garbiso's sac bunt. Parker stole third and scored on a throwing error by New Mexico Highlands, extending their lead 4-1.
 
Adams State held their lead moving in to the top of the sixth. Fryar led off with a single to right field, and advanced to second on a throwing error. Phillips followed up with a single to left field advancing Fryar to third. Micciulli walked to load the bases for pinch hitter Mobley. Mobley singled to first to score one for the Grizzlies. With the bases loaded again, Rocha doubled to left field to score three. Leading by seven, Haskins singled to left field to score their ninth and final run.
 
Phillips completed six innings with two strikeouts. Fryar, Hansen, and Phillips all went 2-3 in the game scoring three runs among them. Rocha and Hansen each went 2-4 with three RBI each.
 
The Grizzlies find their way back in Alamosa for their final homestand against the Regis Rangers on Friday, April 19 and Saturday April, 20.
