ALAMOSA, Colo. – Adams State Baseball and CSU-Pueblo went back at it today in a double header match, The Grizzlies (8-33, 8-22 RMAC) looked to come back after the loss yesterday and the ThunderWolves (19-21, 14-13 RMAC) hoped to seal the series with two more wins.
The scoring started right away as CSU-Pueblo scored in the first inning with a single up the middle by Dakota Popham to score the first run of the game.
Nico Nintze got it going for the Grizzlies with a home run to right field for his eighth home run of the year.
Jake Angelopulos gave Adams State the lead in the second inning with a single up the middle to score
Orlando Romero and take the 2-1 lead.
CSU-Pueblo answered back in the top of the third inning with a double to right center to drive in one run, and single to left field and an error by Adams State to score the second run. A double play scored the last run of the inning for the ThunderWolves to take the 4-2 lead.
The Grizzlies kept it close though as
Jared Gay singled through the right side bringing home
Logan Bistrup and cutting the CSU-Pueblo lead to one.
Three more runs in the fourth increased the lead for CSU-Pueblo with a sacrifice fly to left field, a passed ball and a wild pitch. Adams States sloppy defense was causing them to lose the game.
Jared Gay continued to carry the team with a two run shot to left center, bringing in Nintze who had singled the batter before.
Easton Adler hit a home run in the top of the sixth for CSU-Pueblo to center field, Aiden Welch also homered to right field but his was of the three run variety.
Adams State wasn't done yet though,
Erik Hildebrandt singled through the left side bringing in
Tyler Erzen who had pinch ran for
Orlando Romero. Following that up was
Logan Bistrup who homered to center field bringing in three runs and making it a two run game going into the last inning.
After a
Noah Befus double in the bottom of the seventh with runners on second and third,
Jake Angelopulos grounded out to the first baseman, bringing home
Paul Giglio.
Cameron Brosh, in a pinch hitting appearance with two outs singled to right field bringing home
Dylan Cavey and tying the game.
CSU-Pueblo scored once in the top of the eighth, with Talon Schaller grounding out to second base but bringing a run home in the process.
Adams State entered the bottom of the inning needing to score, and after a fielding error to get
Logan Bistrup on and a walk to
Nico Nintze,
Jared Gay played hero with a towering three run walk off home run to center field to win the game 14-12 for Adams State.
Adams State was led on offense by
Jared Gay, who had three hits, six RBI, two home runs and two runs scored.
Logan Bistrup also had two hits, three RBI and three runs scored to go along with a home run and
Nico Nintze homered as well.
Daniel Brennan started the game and went 4.0 innings, with four strikeouts.
Dalton Carleo got the last out of the seventh inning and got the win for Adams State, moving to 2-6 on the season.
Easton Adler had three hits and four runs scored for CSU-Pueblo, Aiden Welch had three RBI on his home run as well.
Josh Dahl pitched 5.2 innings with nine strikeouts, Andrew Coverly pitched the last inning and took the loss falling to 1-5 on the year.
The second game started similar to the first, with lots of the scoring in the opening innings.
CSU-Pueblo started it off with a Dakota Popham double down the left field line, scoring the first run of the game. A single followed that up to score Popham and get them out to a quick 2-0 lead.
Jared Gay once again brought in the first run of the game for Adams State singling to left field to bring home Nico Nintze, Orlando Romero followed that up with a single to left center to score Gay.
The scoring kept up in the second with two ThunderWolves home runs, first by Gilbert Sauceda with a three run home run, on the back of that was a home run by Dakota Popham who hit a solo shot to left field.
Logan Bistrup answered back in the bottom of the inning with a double down the left field line, bringing Dakota Solis home to score. Both teams stayed quiet in the third but a sacrifice fly but CSU-Pueblo on the board again in the fourth inning.
The Grizzlies scored two in the fourth, the first being on a Logan Bistrup single through the left side bringing home Billy Ryan and then a Nico Nintze single to the shortstop scoring Bistrup.
The same two ThunderWolves did damage again in the fifth, with Gilbert Sauceda singling to center, scoring a run, and then Dakota Popham homered to left field bringing in three more runs.
Adams State continued to chip away with a Billy Ryan sacrifice fly to right field in the bottom of the fifth, scoring Orlando Romero.
Adams State scored once more in the seventh, with a Dakota Solis double to left center scoring Jake Angelopulos. After an Erik Hildebrandt walk the Grizzlies looked in prime position to stage another comeback but Logan Bistrup hit a sharp line drive to the third baseman to end the game.
Logan Bistrup had two hits, and two RBI in the game, Billy Ryan and Dakota Solis also both contributed two hits as well. Troy Gutbub started the game and pitched 4.0 innings with two strikeouts and only two walks. David Maldonado pitched 3.0 innings, with three strikeouts and only three hits allowed with one walk.
Dakota Popham lead CSU-Pueblo, with three hits, five RBI, and three runs scored to go along with two home runs. Gilbert Sauceda also had two hits, four RBI, and three runs scored with a home run. Brett Matthews pitched the entire game with four strikeouts and only one walk.
The Grizzlies and ThunderWolves will close out the series Sunday afternoon. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. at the ASU Baseball Field.
