DENVER – Adams State Women's Lacrosse fell to No. 4 Regis, 21-1, Saturday afternoon on the road. The Grizzlies battle all 60 minutes in their final road contest of the regular season.
The Rangers (15-0, 8-0 RMAC) battled out of a 1-1 tie early against the Grizzlies (0-11, 0-7 RAMC) but then outscored them 20-0 to secure the home win.
Regis scored the game's first goal in 20 seconds to lead 1-0 early. Adams State did not waste anytime responding as
Savannah Penland found the back of the net exactly 40 seconds later to tie the game at 1-all.
The Grizzlies then played solid defense holding the Rangers without a goal for the next two minutes before they scored again. The Rangers found the back of the net with 26:58 to play in the first frame to retake the lead, 2-1.
The second goal for the Rangers help spark their offense as they added seven more goals to lead the Grizzlies 9-1 after 10 minutes of play.
The Grizzlies offense was unable to build on its early goal as they managed just one more shot the rest of the first half. Defensively, they battled hard with the fourth-ranked Rangers but surrendered six more goals in the final 20 minutes of the first half to trail 17-1 at the break.
Helping the Rangers secure a 16-goal lead at the break was a 21-2 shots edge with a 19-2 shots on goal lead. The draw control battle was nearly a 50/50 setup as the Grizzlies won eighth while the Rangers won 11.
The second half was a game of patience for both squads. The Grizzlies defense held the Rangers to just four goals but once again their offense managed to get off just two shots in 30 minutes of play.
The Grizzlies managed to get eight groundballs in the second frame and had 11 for the game. The Rangers defense helped them secure the home win as the Grizzlies had 24 turnovers, with 23 being caused by the home team.
Penland's lone goal led the way for the Grizzlies offense. The team had four shots in the game, with three coming from her.
Esperanza Reyes had the only other shot for Adams State.
Tara Sowards led the defense with two caused turnovers, while
Emily Motz and
Sarah Patterson each had one.
Madison Gerchow led the way in draw controls with a game-high seven, while Penland won two.
Delanie Ward had five groundballs for the game and Sowards added three. In net,
Louisa Sanchez had three saves.
Sarah Myres scored a game-high five goals to lead Regis and tallied three assists for a game-high eight points. Grace Rosenthal also had a hat trick with three goals scored. Wendy Donier scored two goals and added two assists for five points.
Myres and Sarah Lugo led the way for defense with three caused turnovers each. Lauren Hurd was the draw control leader with five. Donier and Sarah Kate Dhom each had four groundball pickups to lead the Rangers. Goalie Hope Carreia notched three saves in the win.
The Grizzlies will close out the 2019 season next Saturday, April 27 at home when they host CSU-pueblo. Game time against the ThunderWolves is set for 1 p.m. at the ASU Lacrosse Field.
