Grizzlies Battle on Senior Day Against ThunderWolves

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Adams State Women's Lacrosse wrapped up the 2019 season Saturday afternoon against Colorado State-Pueblo at home. Despite the inclement weather, the Grizzlies battled the whole way with the ThunderWolves.

Lightning in the area caused the game to be delayed in the first minute of the second half and potentially inclement weather made both coaches agree to call the game at 80% completion. After the lightning delay the two squads played out the second half until there 12:00 on the clock and the contest was ended.

The Grizzlies (0-12, 0-9 RMAC) looked to battle on defense early but the quick offense of the ThunderWolves (6-8, 4-8 RMAC) helped them surge to a 3-0 early. The visitors led 5-0 through the first 10 minutes of play, which helped them build a 14-0 lead at halftime.

Adams State had opportunities to create offense early but were unable to find the back of the net early on. CSU-Pueblo countered with its offense getting in a rhythm early on offense which helped them get out in front and lead wire-to-wire.

With the combination of offense and defense clicking for the ThunderWolves, they went into the break leading by 14. Helping their offense get going in the first half was 10 draw control wins and their defense had 12 groundball pickups.

Coming out of halftime both squads were eager to get back into action before lightning forced a delay. After the delay had ended, the Grizzlies were able to find the back of the net.

Savannah Penland got into the middle of the ThunderWolves defense and quickly scored to give the Grizzlies their lone goal of the contest. With just under 27 minutes left to play, the ThunderWolves led 14-1.

CSU-Pueblo added five more goals in the shortened second half to ultimately secure the 19-1 road win. The game was eventually called with 12:00 on the clock to avoid weather.

Penland led the way with a goal scored and took five shots for the game, with four coming on goal. Four different players each had a groundball. Madison Gerchow had a total of four draw controls wins to help the offense, while Terra Iverson had two. Penland was the defensive leader in caused turnovers with four. Goalie Louisa Sanchez tallied eight saves for the game.

Olivia Tener had a game-high four goals to lead CSU-Pueblo. Allsion Wurscher and Taylor Christensen each totaled five points on three goals and two assists, respectively. Christensen also had four groundballs, 12 draw control wins and two caused turnovers to lead the team. In net, Ane Marie Horton had three saves.
