ALAMOSA, Colo. – Adams State Women's Lacrosse suffered a tough setback Friday afternoon in their RMAC opener after falling 28-0 to Adams to UC Colorado Springs.
The Mountain Lions (4-6, 2-2 RMAC) used a fast start scoring eight goals in the first 10 minutes of play to help them secure the road win. The Grizzlies (0-8, 0-4 RMAC) put up just eight shots in the game as they were shutout at home.
UCCS found a rhythm on offense early with four goals scored in the first four minutes of play to lead 4-0. The visitors continued their fast pace to maintain a wire-to-wire lead and with just over 22:30 play in the half they led 10-0.
The Mountain Lions added seven more goals in the final 22 minutes of play to take a 17-0 lead into halftime. The Grizzlies had 12 saves on defense in the first frame but helping the Mountain Lions establish control was a 14-3 edge on draw controls to go along with 35 shots.
Two goals in the first five minutes of the second half pushed UCCS' lead to 19-0. They added nine more the rest of the way forward to ultimately take down Adams State 28-0. The Grizzlies added six more saves in the second half and tied 6-6 in draw controls.
Savannah Penland led the Grizzlies offense with five shots on the afternoon, four of which that were on goal. She also had two draw controls for the game.
Alexis Wellong added two shots, both of which that were on goal. In net,
Louisa Sanchez tied a career-high in saves with 18.
Natalie Church led UCCS with a game-high seven points. She had four goals to go along with three assists and won 17 draw controls. Kiera Lowe added six points on four goals and two assists. Heather O'Hearn also had four goals and an assist for five points. Goalie Kennedy Travis had five saves in the first half to secure the win.
The Grizzlies will be back home next Friday, April 12 as they host Fort Lewis College. Game time against the Skyhawks is set for 1 p.m. at the ASU Lacrosse Field.
