Grizzlies Cap Off Road Split with Thrilling 2-1 Victory over West Texas

PORTALES, N.M., CANYON, Texas – Adams State Women's soccer made their way to the Land of Enchantment early Thursday morning to battle it out with the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds. Looking to follow up a successful weekend at home, the Grizzlies came up short, suffering their first shutout loss and their first loss on the road, putting their overall record at 1-1 early in the season.

ENMU got the ball rolling with no time to waste in the ninth minute of the matchup, capitalizing on a corner kick which would result in the first goal of the game before the tenth minute hit. The Grizzlies fired back with an electric offensive front, with shot attempts from junior forward, Diana Cerillo and true freshman, Carena Harrison. The attempts accompanied by a corner kick in the 27th minute would leave the Grizzlies high and dry into the second half. Eastern New Mexico would score again in the 36th minute to make the score 2-0 going into halftime.

Trailing by two, with forty-five minutes on the clock, the Grizzlies went back to work in hopes of coming out on top in this desert shootout. ENMU kept their heavy offensive presence with nine total shot attempts in the second half, four of which were saved by senior goalkeeper, Corri Zaiger. Zaiger would come out with seven total saves from the ten shots on goal from ENMU. The Greyhounds would strike again in the 48th minute, capitalizing on another corner kick to make the score 3-0. In the final minutes of the matchup, mid fielder Maya Mau fired a shot toward the Greyhound goal in hopes of saving the Grizzlies from a shutout loss, but was saved to keep the score 3-0 on the night, sending Adams State on the road with their first loss on the season.

Adams State struggled offensively, with only six shot attempts with one on goal compared to ENMU's twenty, with ten on goal. ENMU also had eight corner kicks to Adam State's two.

The humbled Grizzlies made their way further down South two days later to find vengeance in the last game of their weekend road-trip against West Texas A&M. The win brought Adams State back to a winning record of 2-1 early in the season.

The first half of the matchup brought an early offensive attack by the Buffaloes, with four shot attempts and two corner kicks within six minutes of the game. Only one goal would result from a penalty kick, putting Adams State down 0-1 early in the first half. Kaylee Uebel would ensure that the lead didn't stick around, tying up the score 1-1 two minutes before the half.

West Texas came out of halftime with the same aggressive presence, firing two early shots in the 47th and 49th minute of the second half. Adams State would retaliate in the 55th minute with a corner kick that would initiate their own offensive front. A swift kick from Jordyn Maes in the 66th minute would put the Grizzlies on top 2-1.

It was another physical matchup for the Grizzlies, having a total of eight fouls on the night compared to the Buffaloes nine. WTAMU ensured that they looked aggressive at home, having 24 total shots in the matchup with eight on goal, only two more than the Grizzlies who had eight total shots with six on goal.
