DENVER, Colo., SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Adams State women's soccer team suffered two conference losses this past weekend, against RMAC foes Regis on Friday and Black Hills State on Sunday. The tough split drops them to 2-3 overall on the season.
After edging out West Texas 2-1 last weekend, the Grizzlies came to the Mile High City looking to secure a second road win on the young season against Regis University. Goalkeeper,
Corri Zaiger was up in arms early in the match, saving an early shot from Tori Rinsem before the second minute of the game. The Rangers were held off until the 20
th minute of the matchup, striking first after a corner kick to score the only point of the first half. True freshman
Maya Mau and
Carena Harrison had individual shot attempts in the 22
nd and 27
th minute but fell short, ending the first half down 1-0.
Only one goal was on the board, and both teams had only 45 minutes to capitalize. It wasn't until the 65
th minute that Emily Ramos of Regis University sent a penalty kick flying to the bottom left corner of the goal, putting the Rangers on the board again and making the score 2-0. Three more shots were sent flying toward Zaiger in the 66
th and 68
th minute, saving the two that were on goal and holding Regis to a 2-0 lead. A corner kick in the 74
th minute resulted in the final goal of the matchup, giving Regis a comfortable 3-0 lead. Junior midfielder,
Gia Barone sent Adams State's only shot on goal in the 80
th minute but fell short.
The Grizzlies stayed physical with a total of seven fouls, two more than Regis. Both teams earned a yellow card in the second half. Rangers' offense was dominant with 18 total shots with 10 on goal, accompanied by 8 corner kicks. Adams State had only four shot attempts with one on goal and no corner kicks. Zaiger had seven saves on the day and is currently ranked No.2 in the RMAC for saves per game.
After suffering the devastating loss at Regis, the Grizzlies made landing further north to face off against Black Hills State University in Spearfish, South Dakota. After a long shootout against the Hornets, the Adams State women's soccer team ultimately ended their weekend road trip with another loss on the season. The Grizzlies are now 2-3 on the season and 0-2 in the RMAC.
After lacking a strong offensive presence throughout the young season, Adams State came to Spearfish with a different attitude. A shot by
Jordyn Maes early in the seventh minute started a long stretch of aggressive offense for the Grizzlies. Two more shots and four corner kicks between the eighth and 15
th minute would follow. Black Hills Dz-Rae Jara clutched out two saves in that series and had five total in the first half. The Grizzlies had a season high total of eight shots and four corner kicks in the first half but stayed scoreless into halftime.
After a small presence in the first half, Black Hills kicked things off early in the 51
st minute with an early shot from sophomore midfielder Madison Kandler. Grizzlies would counter in the 60
th minute, with shot attempts from
Carena Harrison and
Sydney Wiedeman. It wasn't until the 83
rd minute that Black Hills scored the first goal of the matchup, rebounding off a blocked shot in the 82
nd. The late goal stayed on the boards until the 90
th minute and was the only goal, putting the Grizzlies down 0-2 on the weekend and in conference play.
Grizzlies picked it up on offense with 12 total shots with seven on goal and six total corner kicks. Black Hills had an almost equal amount of shots with eleven total with three on goal. The game stayed physical all 90 minutes, both teams having eight total fouls, Hornets earning all eight in the second half.
The Grizzlies stay at home next Sunday, in yet another conference matchup against Fort Lewis College. The game kicks off at 11 A.M. on the ASU Soccer field.
