Grizzlies Swooped up by Skyhawks in Conference Home Opener

ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Adams State Grizzlies Women's Soccer team fell in their third conference game of the season, 2-1 at home against RMAC rival Fort Lewis Saturday afternoon. The game was mostly a defensive slugfest especially in the second half, that unfortunately ended with the Grizzlies on the wrong end of a close game.

The contest picked up early, when Skyhawk Corrine Sanderson was on the receiving end of a Valerie Mestas assist at the 11-minute mark, and had a wide-open look for a score. The goal was Sanderson's first on the young season, and gave Fort Lewis an early lead.

Throughout the match, Adams State struggled to get shots on goal and put together offensive threats to put pressure on goalie Britt Blomso. This was not the case on the Grizzlies first half score, as Blosmo came out to try and defend an Adams State attack, and got burned when the ball skated past her. Adams State midfielder Jordyn Maes was there to take advantage of the mistake, and punched it in for an unassisted goal to tie up the game with less than 13 minutes left in the half.

The half was coming to a close when the Skyhawks caught the Grizzlies heading into the half just a few seconds too soon. Fort Lewis was able to put together a late attack that caught the Grizzlies in a defensive disadvantage, and a loose ball led to an unassisted goal by Skyhawk Madyson Barela. With less than 20 seconds in the half, the late score put the Skyhawks back on top 2-1.

Both defenses would tighten up in the second half, as shots for either team were few and far between. The only penalty action came at the 69-minute mark, when Rachel Boyle was given a yellow card which gave the Skyhawks a chance to extend their lead. No damage was done, and the score remained 2-1.

The Grizzlies made one final attempt to tie the game, throwing the Fort Lewis defensive unit fresh substitutes to try and penetrate the Skyhawk zone. It would prove to be too little, too late, and time would run out, giving Fort Lewis their second victory of the year.

For the Grizzlies, defensive and goalkeeping have been a strong suit for this 2019 team. They have stayed in games late, but have often been unable to provide an offensive attack to counter opponents when down in the second half.

They look to rebound against two more RMAC opponents in Colorado Christian and Colorado Mines next weekend, as they prep for another weekend home split starting next Friday.
