DURANGO, Colo. – The Adams State Grizzlies Men's Soccer team fell to the Fort Lewis Skyhawks in a defensive slugfest Sunday afternoon, 1-0 in overtime. For the Grizzlies, it is their fourth loss to start the season, and their third by a one goal margin. The Grizzlies have been solid on defense all year long and their goalkeeping has been superb, but they have unfortunately not had the answers on the offensive to translate into wins.
On Friday, the Grizzlies fell to CSU-Pueblo, and were victims of an overtime game ending goal. It would be déjà vu all over again Sunday, as they would be downed by the same form of defeat. The lone scoring action for the match happened a minute and a half in to the extra period, when Loic Jean-Baptiste received an assist from teammate Bradley Bice and finally got one past goalkeeper
Jacob Faircloth, who had six sensational saves in the game.
The goal downed the Grizzlies, who for the moment were discouraged, but feel confident in their formula moving forward. Following the tough overtime defeat, Coach
Matthew Munhall said regarding his team, "The boys stuck to the game plan, and again, proved to be a difficult team to breakdown. This was our second overtime game this weekend. It always challenging playing extra time. The game opened up late and one good counter attack led to their goal. We are still learning to play together, but there is growth each week and in each game."
For the Grizzlies, the second half of RMAC play should be a better measuring stick for a team who is just now getting chemistry on the field. They have a cast of playmakers who will look to really cut loose and contribute moving forward, and if the defense stays as stout as it is now with offensive help along the way, they ought to be in good shape in the future.
Their next contests will be next weekend, again on the road at Colorado School of Mines on Friday at 7:30 PM, and then against South Dakota Mines in Rapid City, S.D. Sunday, at 11 AM.
