ALAMOSA, Colo. - The Adams State Women's Basketball team is set to travel to Grand Junction, Colorado to take on Colorado Mesa this Friday, Jan. 17. The Grizzlies will then matchup against Western Colorado in Gunnison, Colorado Saturday, Jan. 18.
The Grizzlies are coming off of two tough road losses against Colorado School of Mines and UC-Colorado Springs. Adams State is looking to bounce back with high energy from the Grizzlies top scorers,
Zakiya Beckles,
Laura Gutierrez, and
Marshell Hollins. Beckles is averaging 10.9 points per game, with an .800 field goal percentage. Hollins is averaging 7.5 points a game, and is leading the team with total rebounds and averaging 4.3 boards a game.
Scouting the Mavericks
Colorado Mesa is leading the RMAC with a 9-0 record, and 13-2 overall. The Mavericks have had a solid start to their season, and are coming off of big weekend of wins against New Mexico Highlands and CSU-Pueblo. Junior, Daniella Turner is leading the Mavericks on the scoreboard, averaging 16.5 points per game with a .463 field goal average. Defensively, senior, Sydni Brandon is leading Colorado Mesa on the boards, averaging 6 rebounds a game.
Historically, Adams State 0-15 against Colorado Mesa. Last season, the Grizzlies and Mavericks matched up twice in January and February. In their first match up in Alamosa, the Mavericks came out on top 49-59, then in February, Colorado Mesa won 65-47. The Grizzlies will tip off Friday, Jan. 17 at 5:30 p.m. at the Brownson Arena.
Watching Western
Western Colorado has also had a positive season, currently sitting in fourth in RMAC rankings, 7-2 in RMAC and 9-4 overall. The Mountaineers are coming out of a weekend of wins against CSU-Pueblo and New Mexico Highlands. Western Colorado's Samantha Coleman is leading the Mountaineers on the scoreboard, averaging 10.1 points per game. Defensively, Gabie Doud is crashing the boards, averaging 6 rebounds per game.
Historically, Adams State is 15-15 against the Mountaineers. Last season, the two teams faced off twice, with Western Colorado coming out on top both matchups. In Alamosa, the Mountaineers escaped with the win 60-56. In Gunnison, the Grizzlies fell 69-45. Adams State will tip off with the Mountaineers Saturday, Jan. 18 at 5 p.m. in the Paul Wright Gym.
Coming Up
The Grizzlies will make their way back home for Adams State to take on Colorado Christian and Regis University Jan. 24 and 25. Both games will be held in Plachy Hall, with tip off set at 5:30 p.m.
