Alamosa, CO – The No. 11 Adams State University wrestling squad met No. 23 Western State Colorado University at home last night to go head to head in what would be the Grizzlies' first home dual of the 2019-20 season. Plachy Hall would hold a massive home crowd, but it wouldn't be enough for the Grizzlies as they faced their second falling of the season. Western State's 31-12 upset over Adams State brought the Grizzlies to an overall record of 2-2 including a 0-1 record within the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
The first bout brought out 125-pounder
Isaiah De La Cerda who faced a tough falling against Patrick Allis of Western State. The upset put the Grizzlies down by 5 points to start the night. 133-pounder
Jonathan Andreatta would bring Adams State back into contention by winning his bout against Cody Fatzinger in an 8-2 decision victory.
After gaining three points from the Andreatta victory, 141-pounder
Noah Hermosillo would keep it rolling by earning a 3-2 decision victory over Jason Hanenburg to give the Grizzlies the lead.
In the 149-pound weight class, freshman
Josiah Rider would come face to face with Giovanni Cassioppi to earn a 6-0 decision victory and to keep the Grizzly lead growing.
The 157-pound bout would prove to cause the most conflict of the night.
Ryan Rochford would lead Cole Mortensen by a large margin, looking to earn a victory by pinfall and obtaining many opportunities to do so. The intense bout would quickly switch over to Mortenson's favor, pinning Rochford at the 1:40 mark to give Western State the lead.
WSCU would take over in the next three bouts, scraping together 25 points to Adams State's nine until Cole Gustavson would earn a 12-6 decision victory over Espen Weber in the 197 bout. Adams State would end on a 12-point team score to Western State's 31.
Grizzlies are back in action next Wednesday against New Mexico Highlands, awaiting the Cowboys for their second, home dual of the season.
