Grizzlies Bounce Back With 36-9 Victory Over Visiting Cowboys

Alamosa, CO – The Adams State wrestling squad met New Mexico Highlands at home for another week of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action that would end in a well-earned victory for the No. 11 Grizzlies. ASU grapplers would hold the Cowboys to nine team points while putting up 36, increasing their overall record to 3-2 on the season, including a 1-1 record within the RMAC.

The night would kick off with a 174-pound exhibition match between Adams State's Gavin Davy and NM Highlands' Jacob Viera. Davy would hold Viera to only three points in the bout while putting up seven to earn a victory by decision and put up Adams State's first points.

Following the exhibition round came the 125-pound bout between hometown hero Isaiah De La Cerda and Marcus Santillanes. De La Cerda would hold his opponent to four points while racking up seven in the bout, earning a victory by decision.

The smell of victory was in the air for the Grizzlies as 133-pounder Jonathan Andreatta would have a merciless performance against Highlands' Isaac Garcia. Andreatta would keep Garcia scoreless while putting up 17 points, earning a victory by technical fall in just under five minutes.

R-Freshman Josiah Rider would put up an impressive performance tonight, earning a victory by pinfall against Logan Pine. It would only take Rider 1:17 to throw Pine on his back and add on 6 team points to the rapidly growing Grizzly lead. Rider comes in ranked No. 9 in the 149-pound weight class throughout NCAA Division II.

Ryan Rochford would put up Adams State's second victory by pinfall over Thomas Tolbert in 1:28. This would come after Natrelle Demison's victory by forfeit in the 157-bout, adding 12 points to Adams State's overwhelming lead.

Isaac Lopez would show out in the regular 174-pound bout, earning a victory by major decision over NM Highlands' Kenneth Yara. Yara would be held to 2 points to Lopez's 11.

The 187-pound bout would turn into a nail biter as Adams State's William Tyler and NM Highlands' Lance Kilgore would take the match above and beyond three rounds, entering sudden-death territory knotted up at five points each. Tyler would earn a sudden victory over Kilgore after earning two points from a takedown to stockpile more points to the Grizzly lead.

Cole Gustavson would be the last of the Grizzlies to earn a victory to finally put away the visiting Cowboys, earning a 1-0 victory by decision over Denzell Morrow in the 197-pound bout.

NM Highlands would put up nine points, taking away the 141-pound and 285-pound bouts.

Your Grizzly grapplers are back in action next Thursday as they hit the road to face the Thunderwolves of CSU-Pueblo for another in-conference dual.
