ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Adams State Grizzlies Men's Basketball team dropped their second straight game at home Friday night as they fell to the Westminster College Griffins 67-71. The game was a near carbon copy of their close loss against Regis less than a week ago, as the Grizzlies trailed big at one point in the game a clawed their way back to take a short lead late, just to see it evaporate in the closing minutes. They now sit at 4-10 in the conference following the loss.
The Grizzlies fell victim to a late first half run by the Griffins, and went into the half trailing 41-28. Coming out of the half, the Griffins further increased their lead, going up by as many as 18 early in the second half. It was then that the Grizzly offense who shot just 31% from the field in the first half, started to come alive and get them right back into the ballgame. Senior
Rickey Norris came out of the half determined to lead the charge, as he registered a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards in the game. On the defensive end, Norris intercepted two steals to go along with a pair of blocks, as his inspiring effort on both ends was key in the second half comeback.
Freshman
Rylan O'brien continues to be an offensive star, as his 19 points led all scorers in the ballgame. His three steals were key in turning the second half around. O'brien hit four three pointers and his fellow sharpshooter,
Logan Longo nailed three from downtown in the game, which helped cut into the Westminster lead.
A balanced effort from Griffin starters proved to be just enough in the ballgame to help Westminster escape with a four-point victory. They shot just 6-23 from deep in a game that featured a multitude of missed shots for both teams, but made clutch late free throws to come out on top.
The Grizzlies will now focus their efforts on a 19
th ranked Dixie State squad, who currently lead the RMAC and feature plenty of size and athleticism. After Friday's loss, coach
Russ Caton's tema hopes that they can works out the issues that have resulted in heartbreaking late losses and put their best foot forward when by the time comes to tip-off against the tough Trail Blazers. Game time is set for 7:30 PM from Plachy Hall.
