ALAMOSA, Colo.—The Adams State University Grizzly Men's Basketball team fell just short in an upset attempt in their Friday night match-up with No. 17 Colorado Mesa University on Friday night inside Plachy Hall. The Mavericks won the game 100-98.
The game was very close early with neither team running away with the game in the first half, however, the Grizzlies led 42-38 at the break, thanks in part to a 16-of-27 showing from the field and a 7-of-8 showing from the free-throw line.
Adams State claimed their biggest lead of eight points with 14:46 left in the second half. But then the Mavericks went on a 17-3 run to take the lead. They then rumbled the lead up to their biggest lead of ten points with 4:45 remaining in the contest. Adams State then rallied back thanks in part to a 10-2 run to pull within two points. Free throws became crucial for the Mavericks as they hit just enough to keep the Grizzlies at bay and despite a valiant effort in the final 12 seconds, Adams State fell.
The Grizzlies were led by
Destan Williams and
Rylan O'Brien, who each scored 26 points in the game. As a team, the Grizzlies were 35-of-61 from the field (57.4 percent) while shooting 7-of-16 (43.8 percent) from beyond the arch. They were nearly automatic from the charity stripe as they hit 21-of-24 (87.5 percent).
Adams State will now take a holiday break and be back in action in 2021 when they travel to Denver to take on the MSU Denver Roadrunners at 4 p.m. on Jan. 2.
