Grizzlies Go Down in Home Finale, 17-27

ALAMOSA, Colo. The Adams State University wrestling squad hit the mats at home today after spending two weeks on the road and grinding out three, in-conference duals. Grizzlies approach the homestretch to the end of the 2019-20 season, hosting Colorado Mesa at home in Plachy Hall tonight for their final dual of the season.

Adams State grapplers would pose wins in four of the ten bouts, shining bright in the lightweight classes but would be held to 17 team points to the Mavericks' 27. Grizzlies fall to 5-4 on the season including a 3-3 record within the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Adams State stays in a T13 knot within NCAA Division II rankings, falling in between Ashland and Newberry College who also contest the #13 spot.

The night would kick off with the 125-pound bout between Adams State's explosive redshirt-sophomore Isaiah De La Cerda and Colo. Mesa's Cian Apple. De La Cerda would put up the first four team points, scoring 11 points and keeping Apple scoreless, earning a victory by major decision.

#5 Jonathan Andreatta would follow up with another victory in the 133-pound bout, holding his opponent to four points while putting up 14 to give the Grizzlies an early 8-0 lead. Andreatta sits comfortably in the nationally rankings, winning tonight's bout by major decision.

#9 Josiah Rider would show out tonight, earning the only victory by pin-fall for the Grizzlies. Rider would allow the match to go on for a short four minutes before putting away his opponent and earning six team points to add on to the Grizzly lead.

Natrelle Demison would tack three points onto the Grizzly lead, holding Mesa's Dylan Reineiri to a score of seven while putting up 13. Demison would come out of the bout with a victory by decision in the 157-pound bout.

Following the 157-pound bout, Adams State would flaunt a 17-3 lead over the Mavericks. By the 197-pound bout, however, Colorado Mesa would trail only by a single point and take the last two matches with victories by forfeit and technical fall.

Adams State grapplers return to the mats this Sunday, attending the Rocky Mountain Open held by Colo. School of Mines to end the regular season.
