Grizzlies Battle in Opening Doubleheader Against Colorado Christian

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Adams State Softball jumping into week two of RMAC competition at home, taking on Colorado Christian. The Grizzlies fell in the Cougars in both games of the doubleheader, 11-3 and 15-1.
 
Game One
The Grizzlies started out strong with a scoreless first and second innings. At the top of the third, Colorado Christian opened with a leadoff single, and was advanced to third. The Cougars hit into an RBI fielders choice, getting the first run of the game. The Grizzlies responded in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Shelby Haskins was hit by a pitch, giving the Grizzlies a baserunner. Ariella Apodaca pinch ran for Haskins, and was brought in by a Sydney Muniz double.
 
With the score tied at one in the top of the fifth, the Cougars rallied. Kacie Burger of the Cougars hit a leadoff homer to get the inning started. Colorado Christian tacked on three more runs from two doubles and a single to end the top half of the inning leading 5-1. The Cougars followed up with a two-run homer in the top of the sixth and a four-run inning in the top of the seventh. The Cougars led the Grizzlies 11-1 moving into the bottom of the seventh.
 
Adams State fought back in the bottom of the inning. Rebecca Wood got the inning started reaching of an error by the pitcher. Samantha McDonald followed with a walk. Pinch hitter, Maya Ramos-Moreno, bombed a double to centerfield to score both Wood and McDonald. The Grizzlies finished game one falling 11-3.
 
Romero-Moreno led the Grizzlies with her two RBI pinch hit, going 1-1 on the day. McDonald led Adams State going 2-3 with a single and a double. Jade Garbiso started in the circle for the Grizzlies and picked up the loss. Garbiso completed five innings and faced 31 batters. Kelty Key closed the game for Adams State, completing the final two innings and facing 11 batters.
 

Game Two
Adams State again started with a scoreless first inning. Colorado Christian earned their first run in the top of the second from a SAC fly to right field. The Grizzlies tied it up in the bottom of the second with a leadoff walk to Breck Smith. Haskins followed up with a single to left to advance Smith to second. Muniz brought in Smith from a SAC fly to left field.
 
Colorado Christian responded with a seven run inning in the top of the third. After a leadoff single, Burger for the Cougars homered to left center putting Colorado Christian up 3-5. The Cougars followed up with another single, trailed by a homerun to right center. With one out, the Cougars hit a triple to right, scoring one and tacked one more after a Grizzly error. The Cougars completed the top of three leading 8-1.
 
Colorado Christian added four more runs in the top of the fourth. With three singles and two doubles, the Cougars tacked on three. Burger came up and hit her second two-run homerun of the game, third of the day, giving the Cougars the 15-1 lead. The Grizzlies fought back in the bottom of the fourth, with two walks and a single by Muniz, but couldn't get past the Cougar defense. Adams State fell 15-1 in five innings in game two.
 
Muniz led the Grizzlies going 1-1 with RBI SAC fly in the bottom of the second. Haskins and Alyssa Castaneda each went 1-2 in game two. Taylor Sandoval started in the circle for the Grizzlies, completing 2.1 innings, facing 14 batters. Kaitlyn Jackson and Kelty Key each relieved, pitching 1.1 innings each.
 
The Grizzlies will look for redemption tomorrow to close the four-game series against Colorado Christian in a doubleheader. First pitches are set for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. tomorrow, Sun. March, 1.
