Powerful Grizzly Bats Could Not Overcome Cougars

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Adams State Softball falls in tough doubleheader Sunday, March 1. Although Colorado Christian came out on top, the Grizzlies had some solid offense racking up 23 hits on the day.
 
Game One
Adams State had a tough defensive start to open the game. The Cougar bats got hot in the top of the first. After a leadoff walk, Colorado Christian tallied two doubles and three singles to earn their first seven runs in the first inning. Adams State responded in the bottom of the first with a leadoff single by Samantha McDonald. With singles from Tyler Hays and Breck Smith, McDonald was brought in. Sydney Muniz kept the rally going with a 2 RBI double ending the first inning trailing 7-3.
 
After a quick top of the second, Kylea Wall led the bottom of the inning with a triple to right field. Alyssa Castaneda followed up with an RBI groundout to score Wall. The Grizzlies loaded the bases from an error, single and a walk for Smith. McDonald scored the Grizzlies fifth run from Smith's RBI groundout.
 
Moving into the top of the third trailing 7-5, Colorado Christian brough in six more runs. The Cougars started the inning with a two-run homerun to left field. The Cougars loaded the bases with two singles and a walk, then was followed with a grand slam to centerfield. Colorado Christian led 13-5 heading into the bottom of the third inning.
 
With a scoreless bottom half of the inning, Colorado Christian continued their batting streak in the top of the fourth. The Cougars earned nine runs on nine hits. Colorado Christian hit seven singles, one double and one three-run homerun to end the inning up 22-5 over the Grizzlies. The score remained the same to close game one in five innings.
 
Tyler Hays led the Grizzly bats in game one, going 2-2 with two singles and a walk. Wall was also a big hitter for the Grizzlies, going 2-3 with two triples. Taylor Sandoval took the loss in the circle for Adams State, completing 3.1 innings, facing 31 batters. Kelty Key also pitched for the Grizzlies, completing
 Innings and faced 12 batters.
 
Game Two
Momentum shifted for the Grizzlies in game two.  Colorado Christian earned one run in the top of the first from a double to center, followed by a single to right. Adams State's bats came alive in the bottom of the first. With Jasmine Parker and Hays aboard, Smith bombed a homer to left field, giving the Grizzlies an early 3-1 lead. Haskins followed up to make it back-to-back homers, crushing the ball down the right field line. The Grizzlies rallied with two outs, beginning with a double from Analiese Rodriguez followed by a single by Jade Garbiso. Pinch hitting, Maya Ramos-Moreno singled to center field to score Rodriguez. McDonald then hit a single to left field and scored Garbiso. Adams State ending the inning leading the Cougars 6-1.
 
After a scoreless second, the Cougars opened the top of the third with a double to center field. The Cougars brought in six runs on six hit to regain the lead over the Grizzlies, 7-6. Garbiso answered in the bottom of the inning with a solo homerun to tie they game at seven. Hays joined in on the fun, hitting a solo homerun to lead off the top of the fourth inning to regain the lead, 8-7 . Colorado Christian tied it again in the top of the fifth from a leadoff double to left center, and brought in by a single through the left side.
 
The score remained tied at eight until the top of the seventh. The Cougars hit a leadoff double to left field, and was brought in by a single to the shortstop. Colorado Christian added their tenth run from a single to right field. Adams State fought hard in the bottom of the seventh, but could not get the ball to fall. The Grizzlies went down, 10-8 to close their four-game series against Colorado Christian.
 
The Grizzlies hit four homeruns in game two, tallying in 6 RBIs. McDonald and Haskins each went 3-4 in game two with an RBI. Garbiso and Hays went 2-4, also earning an RBI a piece. Garbiso completed a full seven innings in the circle for Adams State, facing 37 batters.
 
Adams State will continue their search for an RMAC win next weekend in Spearfish, South Dakota as they take on Black Hills State March 7 and 8.
