ALAMOSA, Colo. – Adams State Women's Basketball wins big over Skyhawks to close the 2020 season. The seniors took charge celebrating their final game, getting the win 63-57 over Fort Lewis.
The Grizzlies and Skyhawks battled it out in a very close game. The lead changed nine times throughout the course of the game, and the score was tied
ten times. The Grizzlies opened up the game with a layup from
Maddie Dorris and an assist by
Marshell Hollins. From there, Adams State and Fort Lewis tied the game three times in the first quarter. Adams State finished the first quarter leading the Skyhawks 17-13.
Fort Lewis came out in the second quarter playing quick offense and tough defense. The Skyhawks outscored the Grizzlies 11-6 in the second.
Zakiya Beckles hit a good three to get the Grizzlies started followed by a layup by
Kassie Schell and a free throw by
Makaela Ewing. Adams State trailed 23-24 heading into half.
Adams State came out with fire and urgency in the second half. Ewing hit a good layup with an assist from Dorris to regain their lead. Beckles and
Ally McKenzie continued to battle for the Grizzlies going back and forth, tying the score again at 30 points each. Going back and forth with the Skyhawks,
Laura Gutierrez hit a three to end the quarter tied at 37.
Fort Lewis got the fourth quarter going with scoring the first two points. Adams State responded to the Skyhawks six point with free throws from Gutierrez and Ewing. With 4:33 remaining in the game, the score was tied at 45. Fort Lewis gained their largest lead of four in the quarter.
Danielle Jimenez hit a momentum shifting three pointer with just over three minutes remaining. Dorris followed her up with two big shots from the line to put the Grizzlies up, 50-49. With the score tied again at 52, Jimenez went 3-4 from the free throw line in the next 20 seconds of play. Adams State capitalized on four steals in the last minute of the game to put them up 63-55. The Grizzlies walked away with a 63-57 win over the Skyhawks, finishing their 2020 season.
Leading the Grizzlies tonight was Beckles with 14 points and defensive 8 rebounds. Hollins, Ewing, and Gutierrez each finished the night with 9 points. Hollins led the team with 6 assists and Guiterrez was second on the team with 6 rebounds, 1 offensive and 6 defensive. Dorris finished the night with 8 points, with a perfect 2-2 from the line. Jimenez hit 6 game changing points on the night and led the team with two steals.
The Grizzlies ended their season with a bang, finishing 4-24 overall. Adams State has a great foundation built, and lots to look forward to next season.
