LAKEWOOD, Colo. – Adams State Women's Basketball plays tough in Saturday's matchup against Colorado Christian. The Grizzlies battled and fought through a fairly evenly matched game, falling 52-44. The Grizzlies now fall back to 3-12 in RMAC and 3-19 overall.
Colorado Christian started off the game strong scoring 17 in the first quarter. The Grizzlies battled back with
Marshell Hollins hitting the first jumper for the Grizzlies in the first.
Paiton Demps tacked on two good free throws along with
Ally McKenzie hitting a good three to end the quarter trailing 17-7.
Maddie Dorris put up a good layup to open the second quarter for Adams State. Battling back, the Grizzlies added two free throws by Dorris, two layups from McKenzie, and a huge fastbreak three from
Laura Gutierrez to end the second quarter 30-21.
Adams State played a solid third quarter, out scoring the Cougars 15-14. Hollins started the Grizzlies second half with a layup to keep the Cougar lead at 9. Dorris, McKenzie, Gutierrez each added a layup to keep the Grizzlies in the game. Adams State ended the quarter cutting Cougar lead to 8, 44-36.
Demps began the fourth hitting a three to cut the lead down to five. The Cougars extended their lead with a couple of layups.
Makaela Ewing and
Zakiya Beckles each put up a layup to keep the Cougars in reach. Gutierrez ended the game with a free throw, giving the Grizzlies 44 to the Cougars 52 concluding the game.
McKenzie led the Grizzlies on the scoreboard with 13 points. Gutierrez was also a big leader, scoring 8 points, grabbing 4 rebounds and 4 steals. Demps led Adams State grabbing 5 defensive rebounds and 7 points.
Adams State will remain on the road next weekend, February 14 and 15, as they travel to Utah to take on Dixie State and Westminster College.
