ST. GEORGE, Utah – The Adams State Grizzlies Baseball team lost both games of their doubleheader in St. George, Utah, falling to the Dixie State Trailblazers 22-2 in the first game and 23-2 in the second. The Trailblazers now win the series, having won Friday's game 9-1. The final game of the series is set for 12 PM Sunday.
Game 1
The Grizzlies started the day with a fresh slate after the loss to open the series.
Cutter Smith got the start, and got off to a very rough start, giving up eight runs in the first inning. Smith pitched through three innings and was pulled to start the fourth in favor of reliever
Lucas Bufmack. Smith was credited with the loss, giving up 11 earned runs on nine hits.
Things did not get much better for the Grizzlies in the final four innings of the seven-inning contest, as
Connor Flynn came in to relieve Bufmack in the fifth and gave up 6 earned runs in less than an inning of work.
Mike Bathauer was the final pitcher to take the mound for the Grizzlies, and competed hard, giving up the final five runs in an inning and two thirds of work, but he would strike out three Trailblazer batters.
With the Grizzlies down big in the top of the seventh inning, Nate Hield tripled down the right field line to score
Paul Giglio, to give them their second and final run of the ballgame. Hield had the best day offensively out of any Grizzly, going two for three with a single and a triple. He hopes to build off of his good performance and inspire the Grizzly offense, who have been cold as of late.
Altogether, the Grizzlies finished the game with two runs on four hits, and committed one error.
Game 2
With the Grizzlies hopeful to flip the script and scrap the ugly loss in game one, they put their faith in starting pitcher
Dalton Carleo to do just that. Unfortunately for the second game in a row, the Grizzlies gave up over 20 runs and lost 23-3. Carleo would be credited with nine earned runs in three and two thirds innings of work, giving up 13 runs overall.
Coming into relieve Carleo was
Orlando Romero, who came in during the fourth inning, and have up six runs on six hits. Finally,
Connor Flynn finished the game for the Grizzlies, giving up the final two runs on four hits.
The Grizzlies defense struggled in the second game, committing four errors on defense. They managed just three hits in the ballgame, two of which belonged to
Zach Thomas who went two for two with one RBI.
The Grizzlies now hope to close the series with a better performance Sunday, with
Troy Gutbub set to take the mound. Game time from St. George is set for 12 PM tomorrow afternoon.
