WRES | Grizzlies go 2-1 at Midwest Duals

KEARNEY, Neb. – The No. 10 Adams State University Grizzly wrestling team went 2-1 at the 2021 University of Nebraska at Kearney Midwest Duals on Saturday. The Grizzlies picked up wins over No. 25 Chadron State to make up the January 6th meet that was postponed, and University of Central Missouri while falling to No. 2, host University of Nebraska Kearney.

#10 Adams State 31, #25 Chadron State 14
The Grizzlies opened with a 25-0 lead over Chadron State as the No. 5 wrestler at 125 pounds Isaiah De La Cerda defeated Tate Stoddard with a fall in 2:49 to put ASU up 6-0. Jonathan Andretta maintained won his fifth match of the season as he defeated Joseph Taylor with a 10-1 major decision to push ASU up to a 10-0 lead.

Angel Flores defeated Joseph Ritzen with a 9-7 decision for three points before Noah Hermosillo, who is ranked No. 5 at 149 pounds, defeated Sebastian Robles in a 7-4 decision. Dylan Udero earned a third-period fall over Preston Renner in 6:48 to add six points to the team total.

Aaden Valdez, who entered the weekend ranked No. 10 at 165 pounds. Earned a narrow 3-2 decision over Tate Allison for three team points.

The No. 4 wrestler at 174 pounds, Rowdy Pfeil earned the first points of the bout for the Eagles as he earned a 10-2 major decision over Cody Lewis.

At 184 pounds, Gavin Davy stunned Joseph Renner with a quick fall in the second period at 4:13 for six team points. Cole Gustavson saved the Grizzlies two points as he survived a near fall attempt in the final 15 seconds of the 197-pound match. Eli Hinojosa earned four team points with a 12-2 major decision.

Mason Watt closed out the dual with a fall in the first period over Nathan Ellis.

#2 Nebraska Kearney 37, #10 Adams State 9
De La Cerda battled hard but lost the opening match of the dual, 9-7 before Andreatta who was ranked No. 3 at 133 pounds pulled off a narrow win over No. 2 ranked Wesley Dawkins, 5-3.

At 141 pounds, Nick James defeated Flores by a score of 10-8 in sudden victory. Hermosillo earned a fall over Sam Turner in 2:16 before Udero lost to Jacob Wasser in an 11-2 sudden victory.

Valdez met up with Matt Malcolm, who is ranked No. 2 at 165 pounds and 17-1 for a tech fall in 5:31. The No. 5 wrestler at 174 pounds, Terrell Garraway, earned a fall over Lewis in 4:06 while Austin Eldredge earned a 16-1 tech fall over Davy, Joseph Reimers, who is ranked No. 7 at 197 pounds, earned a 17-0 tech fall over Gustavson and Lee Herrington earned a fall over Ellis in 1:42.

#10 Adams State 42, University of Central Missouri 9
In the final dual, Adams State earned forfeits at 133, 141, 149, and 285 pounds while Valdez earned a fall at 165, Lewis earned a 16-5 major decision, Davy earned a 13-1 major decision and Gustavson earned a major decision.

The Grizzlies will be closing out the regular season with two home duals. They are set to host Colorado School of Mines on January 30, at 3 p.m., and CSU Pueblo at 6 p.m. on February 3. Fans will not be allowed to attend home duals.
