HAYS, Kan.—The No. 10 Adams State University Grizzlies opened the 2020-21 season on Saturday with two duals at the 2021 Fort Hays State University Dual Jamboree at Gross Memorial Stadium. The Grizzlies, who saw the schedule change three times in the last week due to COVID-19, finally secured two duals.
Adams State defeated No. 12 Fort Hays State, 24-21 before downing No. 23 Newman, 29-18.
Adams State 24, Fort Hays State 21
Adams State opened the first dual with six straight wins to take an early 24-0 lead. The Tigers then secured four wins to close out the dual.
Isaiah DeLaCerda opened up the action with a 16-0 technical fall over Broderick Green before
Jonathan Andreatta earned a fall over Mason Turner in 2:57.
Angel Flores (8-7),
Noah Hermosillo (8-2) and Dylan Urdero (4-2) each earned decisions. The Grizzlies and Tigers then traded major decisions as
Aaden Valdez scored a 9-1 major decision over Nick Lucas to secure the win for ASU. Martin Verhaeghe secured a 15-2 major decision over
Cody Lewis.
Aryus Jones then capitalized on a late fall in 5:55 to defeat
Gavin Davy and cut into the Grizzly lead. Tereus Henry defeated Cole Gustavson with a 17-2 tech fall while AJ Cooper defeated
Nathan Ellis in a fall.
Adams State 29, Newman 18
Adams State battled and allowed the Jets to have some hope until the final three matches where they closed it out for the strong win.
DeLaCerda opened the second dual with another stellar performance as he posted a 20-5 technical fall to give the Grizzlies a 5-0 early lead.
Andreatta then got his second fall of the day as he defeated Jake Patch in the first period. Newman earned their first points of the dual on a fall by Tyler Lawley over Greyson LeCompte in 4:40.
Hermosillo earned six team points as he earned a forfeit at 149 pounds before
Dylan Udero used a flurry of action for a quick reversal in the final ten seconds of the match to defeat Mario Rodriguez, 4-3, and give Adams State a 20-6 advantage.
Valdez won a hard-fought contest with Kameron Frame to garner three team points for the Grizzlies as they led 23-6.
At 174 pounds, JD Johnson earned a fall over Lewis in 6:15 to cut the lead down to 11.
Gavin Davy then secured the win as he battled and earned two key takedowns in the third period to defeat Nate Panagakis, 7-3.
Gustavson earned the final Grizzly win.

The Grizzlies are scheduled to travel to Colorado Mesa on Thursday and then Western Colorado on Friday. Both duals are set to start at 6 p.m.
