LAS VEGAS, N.M.—The Adams State University volleyball team was able to overcome an early slump as they came back and squeezed past the New Mexico Highland University Cowgirls in five sets on Tuesday night.
The Grizzlies won with set scores of 20-25, 25-16, 24-26, 25-17 and 15-12.
Despite hitting at a .261 clip in the first set, Adams State found themselves down 12-4 early and eventually the Cowgirls won the set 25-20.
Adams State retaliated and came alive in the second set as they won the set 25-16. The two teams battled in the third set with NMHU squeaking the win, 26-24. Adams State then controlled the fourth set with 17 total kills and got the win, 25-17.
The fifth set saw both teams trade points from the get-go with neither team scoring two consecutive points until the Cowgirls did to make the score 6-4. Adams State rallied back with a kill from
Anna Huggins. The Cowgirls then jumped out to an 8-5 lead but a timely timeout by
Lindy Mortensen saw Adams State come out and rally for four straight points to take a 9-8 lead.
After a timeout by NMHU, the teams traded points again with the score tied at 10 and 11 but the Grizzlies, behind two arrack kills and a
Shannon Mulkey take over, Adams State finished off the set with a 15-12 win.
In the game the Grizzlies had 62 kills as two players finished with double digit kills.
Shannon Mulkey led the way with 17 kills and only four errors in the gam as she hit at a .433 clip.
Riley Rabedeaux finished the match with 11 kills and a .333 clip.
Adams State as a team hit at a .312 clip and had four aces in the contest.
The Grizzlies will return to action on Saturday inside Plachy Hall at 6:00 p.m. when they host Regis as a part of homecoming weekend.
