GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—In what was a historic game in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, the Adams State University Grizzlies were defeated by the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks, 49-14, on Saturday evening inside Ralph Stocker Stadium. The game was historic as the first game in the RMAC where two African American coaches faced off against each other.
The Mavericks opened the action with a 4-play 75-yard drive that saw 72 yards on the ground and ate up just 1:39 on the clock.
Adams State then went backwards on their first offensive try as they were forced into a fourth-and-11 situation. In the punt attempt, a bad snap saw the Mavericks get a recovery at the 1-yard line where they cashed in for a touchdown to make the score 14-0.
Adams State did not stay down though as they drove down the field and after seven plays that ate up 75 yards, Adams State made the score 14-7 after
Ian Fryday caught a 9-yard touchdown with 9:39 showing on the clock.
The Mavericks took advantage of other short fields to cash in for six total first half touchdowns as they ran 40 plays from the line of scrimmage for 340 yards to take a 42-7 lead into the halftime break.
Adams State got a special teams touchdown in the fourth as Blake Moore had his punt blocked by
John Vawar III and
Elijah Harper scooped the ball up and was able to keep his balance into the endzone for a 12-yard score.
Adams State had 67 plays for 182 yards while Colorado Mesa had 76 plays for 482 yards.
The Grizzlies will return to Rex Stadium next week when they host Chadron State in the homecoming game at 1:00 p.m..
