GOLDEN, Colo.—Eight kills from
Shannon Mulkey and six more from
Alexandra MacAskill weren't enough to give Adams State a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win against No. 6 Colorado School of Mines on Friday.
The sixth-rated Orediggers had 12 kills from Taylor Hicken, 11 more from Julia Eiken and 10 more from Amanda Donais to pick up a 25-10, 25-22, 25-21 win at Lockridge Arena.
The Grizzlies slipped to 7-9, 3-4 in the RMAC. Mines improved to 14-1 overall and a spotless 7-0 mark in conference play.
CSM entered the match as the top hitting team (.333) in the conference and was averaging 14.98 kills per set, also tops in the conference. Those marks held true to form in the opening set. Mines' hitting percentage was for the match (48 kills and 14 errors in 93 chances. Adams State could muster 30 kills in 102 chances for a hitting percentage of .157.
Mines led the first set from start to finish. Hicken put three balls away among the Orediggers' first eight points of play. The Grizzlies pulled to within 10-5 after a service error. But CSM responded with a 10-2 spurt. Two aces (one by
Anna Huggins and one by Aileen Bugas) started the rally. HIcken, Amanda Donais and Lindsey Jin finished off the rally with kills on successive serves.
ASU started the second set in strong fashion. Kills from Megan (she had two) and
Riley Rabedeaux helped the Grizzlies score 10 of the first 15 points of the set. Bugas and
Sierra Leone Sanchez picked up aces to pull the Orediggers even at 13. CSM took the lead for keeps after an attack error and one of Hicken's eight kills in the second set.
ASU pulled to within three points on three occasions late in the set. But a pair of attack errors and a pair of CSM kills -- one by Rose Stuewe and one by Donais -- kept ASU out of the win column.
The third set featured four ties and three lead changes, the most competitive of any of the three sets. Both squads piled up a dozen kills.
Cindy Garcia led the Grizzlies with five. Mulkey, MacAskill and Rabedeaux had two each. Donais led the Orediggers with three. Donais, Jin, Eiken, Stokes and Hicken each added two kills to the cause.
The Grizzlies continue their weekend road trip with an RMAC match at Chadron (Nebraska) State. First serve is set for 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9.
