ALAMOSA, Colo.— Adams State's women's volleyball team sent its senior class off in style on Saturday by beating Western Colorado University 25-23, 18-25, 25-23, 25-16 at Plachy Hall.
ASU improved to 11-16 overall, 7-11 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. WCU slipped to 13-13 overall and 8-10 in the RMAC. Despite the win, the Grizzlies will miss out on the RMAC Tournament by virtue of the third tiebreaker with New Mexico Highlands.
Both Adams State and New Mexico Highlands finished with 7-11 RMAC records. The first tiebreaker is head-to-head conference match record. Adams State and New Mexico Highlands played twice this season in conference play and split, making each team 1-1 against each. The second tiebreaker is head-to-head conference set record. Both matches went five with a 5-5 record.
The third tiebreaker is the overall conference set percentage. In conference play, Adams State won 33 sets and played a total of 75 sets, giving ASU a conference set percentage of .440. New Mexico Highlands won 32 sets in conference play and played a total of 71 sets, giving NMHU a conference set percentage of .451.
On Friday,
Shannon Mulkey led the Grizzlies with 12 kills and a hitting percentage of .310.
Anna Huggins finished with 10 kills, while
Alexandra MacAskill had seven kills and a hitting percentage of .286.
Bailey Schlosser had 21 assists for the Grizzlies. She also had the team's only service ace.
Kat Finnerty led the Mountaineers with 13 kills. Jordyn Todd was close behind with 12, while Emily Mangone had 11 (she also had two service aces), and Jaeda Davis-Golliher totaled eight. Haylee Martinez totaled 28 assists for WCU.
When the Grizzlies controlled play at the net, they had success against the Mountaineers. ASU's hitting percentage in the third set was .163 as compared to the Mountaineers' .021. In the fourth set, the Grizzlies percentage was .286, while Western Colorado's percentage was .036.
The Mountaineers finished with 50 total kills and a hitting percentage of .127. The Grizzlies had 51 kills and a hitting percentage of .170.
